The gathering storm

The temperature drops slightly as the first gust of wind picks up from the west sea.

Kevin failed to replace the worn anchor shackle as the storm intensified, while Jenny managed to eat and dress her ankle wound before the heavy rain arrived.

🔧 Kevin02:50

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage, checking the dinghy mooring and generator storm lashings as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting west. Barometer was 983 and falling — this is the front arriving. Need to check the dinghy lines and generator lashings before it builds.

🌿 Jenny02:51

Kevin, check the dinghy lines again—the wind is shifting.

Lean back against the porch post, wincing as I shift my weight off the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; a storm is coming before the boat, and my ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin02:52

Already did. Doubled the stern spring, new half-inch three-strand. Bow warp's holding on the storm anchor. But I'll check again.

Walk down to the dock, pull each line taut by hand, inspect the chafe points at the gunwale and mooring ring, test the storm anchor warp tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. West wind means fetch across open water — dinghy'll surge differently. Already checked but she doesn't know that. Ankle's bothering her more than she's letting on.

🌿 Jenny02:53

Check the bow warp specifically—the swell is getting high too fast.

Wipe the salt from my eyes with the back of my hand, watching the grey horizon swallow the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If that anchor drags, the dinghy is lost, and I can't swim out to it with this leg.

🔧 Kevin02:54

Right.

Walk the dock to the bow, haul in the storm anchor warp hand-over-hand to check tension and scope, feel for jerking on the anchor, check the shackle at the anchor eye and the bitter end lashing on the forward cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen something I haven't — or felt it in the ankle. Swell building fast means the front's moving quicker than the barometer said. Bow warp takes the shock loads.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:55

Watch out for that shackle, the metal looks thin.

Adjust the pressure wrap on my ankle, feeling the heat throb against the fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there working, but the sea doesn't care about his effort.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:56

Which one — the anchor eye or the cleat end?

Lean over the bow, pull the warp up to inspect both shackles close, run fingers over the metal at the anchor eye and the cleat termination.

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about the shackle on the storm anchor warp — not the dock shackle I've been fighting. Different shackle. She's watching from the porch, sixty feet up, ankle throbbing, and she's picking out a worn shackle eye in failing light. Good eyes. Or she's been watching me work that anchor line enough to know the hardware.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:57

The anchor eye. It looks like it's worn through.

Grip the railing of the porch as a sharp gust of wind shakes the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The anchor eye. It's taking the most strain from the surge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:58

Got it. Swapping it now.

Unlash the bitter end from the forward cleat, pull the warp aboard, cut the worn shackle free with the heavy wrench or hacksaw, splice on a sound shackle with a thimble using sail twine and marline, re-lash the bitter end to the cleat with

💭 peek at the thought
Anchor eye shackle worn through — that's the weak link. If it parts, the dinghy goes broadside to the swell, takes the dock with it, maybe the cottage moorings. Need to swap it now before the load spikes. Have the new half-inch line and a sound shackle in the workshop. Tide's low, swell building, wind rising. Do it from the bow, one-handed if needed.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:59

Hurry up, Kevin. The sky is turning mean.

Watch the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust on the porch floor.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope that shackle holds; the tide is starting to pull.
