The Gathering Storm

Kevin and Jenny are together at the dock as the first cool breeze picks up from the north.

The morning air is heavy with humidity, the flat sky darkening as the wet season clouds thicken. The tide is rising steadily against the dock, putting pressure on the already rotted southern pilings.

🌿 Jenny02:21

The sky is turning, Kevin. We need to secure the garden tarp before the wind really shifts.

Wince and shift my weight off my swollen ankle, clutching the edge of the dock for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that storm hits before the boat comes, the seedlings are gone and I won't even be able to walk.

🔧 Kevin02:21

Go sit. I'll do it.

walk to the garden and check the tarp corners, re-stake any that have lifted

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the barometer's been dropping all morning and that north wind always brings trouble. The tarp's already loose at one corner from yesterday. My hands are still salt-stiff from the shackle work but the garden comes first. She shouldn't be putting weight on that ankle at all.

🌿 Jenny02:23

I'm not a patient, Kevin. I'm coming with you.

Limp slowly after him, leaning heavily on a piece of driftwood for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a porcelain doll. I can't just sit here while the wind picks up; if he misses a corner, the rain will flatten the tomatoes.

🔧 Kevin02:23

Fine. But you sit on the garden wall while I check the corners. Doctor's orders.

reach the garden and inspect the tarp's leading edge where it's tucked under the ridge beam, testing the batten strips for give

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the shackle pin. She'll make it worse and then I'll be carrying her back. But arguing wastes breath and time — wind's freshening already. Let her come. Just means I work faster.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:25

Just make sure the north corner is pinned. The wind always catches that lip first.

Lower myself carefully onto the garden wall, my breath hitching as the weight hits my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating me like a specimen. But the wall is steady, and I can see the whole layout from there.

🔧 Kevin02:25

North corner first. Then the east.

move to the north corner of the garden, pull back the tarp edge, and drive a fresh oak stake through the grommet and into the soil with the mallet, seating it deep

💭 peek at the thought
North corner took the worst of the last blow. The timber strip there was working loose — I saw it yesterday but the shackle ate the day. She notices everything. Always has.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:27

Deep enough. Now check the tension on the east side—it looked slack yesterday.

Lean back on my elbows, watching the grey clouds roll in and tracing the line of the tomato rows.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing it right, but the soil there is too sandy. It'll pull out if the gusts hit sixty.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:27

Batten's warped. Gonna need a second stake line or a new strip.

walk the east edge, pull the tarp drum-tight, and drive a second oak stake through the mid-grommet, then run a timber batten strip between the two stakes and screw it down

💭 peek at the thought
East side's been slack since the last storm — the batten strip there's warped and won't hold tension. Need a new strip or a second stake line. Wind'll shred the tarp if it catches that flap.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:29

Tight enough to hold. If that goes, the whole bed gets buried in the mud.

Rub the swollen skin around my ankle, watching him work the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
That's better. The tension is holding, but my ankle is throbbing in time with the hammer.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:29

Tarp's done. Shade cloth over the tomatoes needs another tie-off. You staying out here?

walk to the tomato rows, pull the shade cloth taut against the wind, and lash the loose corner to the garden wall's embedded ring with a length of the new half-inch rope

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tomatoes, not me. The stakes I drove last week are holding but the shade cloth over them billows — needs another tie-off before dark. Tarp's secure now. Three corners solid, east side doubled. Good for tonight at least.
