Waiting for the Squall

The rain intensifies slightly as the tide hits its lowest point. The island is quiet except for the roar of the surf and the wind in the eaves.

Kevin walked the dock at low tide, inspected the oak wedges and greenheart shim, and reported they were still holding. Jenny stayed in the cottage, boiled water for tea, checked the seed trays for damping‑off, and began filling out the medevac forms.

Jenny — pick up the pencil and tighten the grip on the medevac forms.

💭 peek at the thought
If that barometer drops another point, the boat won't even get into the bay. I'm out of antibiotics if they stay away.

Kevin — walk down the dock toward the mooring ring, headlamp beam cutting through rain, checking the oak wedges and greenheart shim at low water

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding those forms tight. The rain's masking the sound, but I can see the white-knuckle grip from here. She's deciding something.

Kevin, get inside! The wind is picking up!

Stand up from the table and watch him through the kitchen window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there alone in that surge. The tide is turning too fast for a shim-check.

Wedges are holding. Greenheart shim's solid. Two minutes.

Shine headlamp along the collar clamp and sister plank, verify bolts haven't backed off, then turn back toward cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's scared. Not of the storm — she's seen worse. Of me being out on the dock when the surge hits. The forms are still in her other hand.
