The Rising Swell

The air grows heavy and humid as the clouds blot out the sun. The first heavy waves begin to slap against the dock with a rhythmic thud.

The rain continues to fall steadily over the island, though the barometric pressure is rising, signaling the storm is breaking. The tide is at its peak, lapping against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the focus shifts to the drying seeds and the healing wound.

🌿 Jenny11:03

Kevin! Get the seeds from the way, now!

Limps to the porch, grabbing the plastic tarp and the heirloom seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming hard, and if I don't get those seeds inside now, the mold will ruin the whole tin.

🔧 Kevin11:04

Right behind you.

Grab the heirloom seed packets drying on the porch table and the grandmother's seed tin, then follow Jenny to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming faster than the barometer said. Get the seed tin under cover, then secure the dinghy and generator.

🌿 Jenny11:05

way put them on the table, don't drop them.

Shuts the cottage door against the rising wind and leans against the kitchen counter, clutching her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving for once, though the damp is already seeping through the door.

🔧 Kevin11:06

Seeds on the table. Dry tin beside them. You sit. I'll secure outside.

Turn back to the door, pull it shut against the wind, and head down the porch steps to the generator shed.

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds safe. Now the rest — generator, radio, dinghy lines. She shouldn't be on that ankle.

🌿 Jenny11:07

Don't stay out there too long, the wind is turning!

Limps to the kitchen chair, wincing as the ankle throbs, and opens the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always going out into the rain while I'm stuck here rotting from this infection.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Won't. Generator, mast, dinghy. Ten minutes.

Walk fast to the generator shed, check fuel level and oil, then tighten the ratchet straps holding it to the skid.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest, building steady. Generator first — fuel, oil, storm lashings. Then radio mast guys. Dinghy springs doubled. She's got the medical supplies, I've got the iron.

🌿 Jenny11:09

way... make sure the radio stays dry.

Unwraps the bandage, hands shaking as she sees the red, angry skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity when a storm is brewing and my leg is screaming.

🔧 Kevin11:10

Radio's covered. Mast guys now.

Move to the radio mast base, check the three guy rope tensioners, and cinch each one down against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's under the porch overhang, coax run through the window. Insulator's new porcelain, sealed with self-amalgamating tape. It'll hold. Generator's strapped. Mast guys next.
