The Rising Tide

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the wind begins to pick up. The crate sits on the sand, waiting to be opened.

Kevin pried open the waterlogged wooden crate using the crowbar as the tide rose against the dock. Jenny monitored the swelling in her ankle while helping clear the sand from the contents. They recovered a coil of new rope and several tinned provisions from the damp interior.

🌿 Jenny15:35

Check the seal first, Kevin. The wood looks heavy with water and rot.

walk toward the crate, favoring my left side while reaching for the crowbar.

💭 peek at the thought
If this is just more salt and fuel, I'm going to lose it. My ankle is burning through the bandage.

Got the crowbar. You want the long handle or the short?

Walk down to the crate at the water's edge, testing the sand for footing.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's pushing it up the beach. If we don't get a line on it soon, the next swell takes it back out.

🌿 Jenny15:37

The long one. I don't want to be straining.

lean against the stone wall of the cottage, watching him work the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The long one. I need the leverage because I can't put my weight on this leg.

🔧 Kevin15:37

Brace yourself against the wall. I'll start at the seam.

Slide the crowbar under the lid's edge, heel down, and pry up slow to feel the resistance.

💭 peek at the thought
Wet wood swells. If the nails are rusted through, it'll come apart easy. If not, we'll need leverage.

🌿 Jenny15:39

Don't be so gentle with it. It's already half-rotted.

shift my weight, gripping the edge of the stone wall until my knuckles turn white.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too cautious. Just rip the damn thing open before the tide takes it back.

🔧 Kevin15:39

Then I'll break it open.

Put my full weight on the crowbar, driving it down to split the lid along the grain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's in pain but won't say it. The wood's giving — I can feel it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:43

Watch out for splinters.

flinch slightly, eyes fixed on the wood as it gives way with a sharp crack.

💭 peek at the thought
Please let there be medicine. If it's just more hardware, I'm done.

🔧 Kevin15:43

Clear.

Set the crowbar aside and reach in, pulling the top layer aside to see what's underneath.

💭 peek at the thought
Lid's off. Salt crust and rot. Let's see what the sea gave us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:45

Is it dry in the back?

lean forward, ignoring the sharp spike in my ankle, to peer into the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
What is it? Please let's not be more salt-crusted junk.

🔧 Kevin15:45

Mostly. Cans at the back. Rope on top.

Pull the coil of new rope free first, shaking off sand, then start hauling tins out one by one.

💭 peek at the thought
Back corner's damp but not soaked. Tin cans, maybe more. Need to get it up the beach before the tide turns.
