Approaching Storm

The warm rain intensifies as the wind begins to shift. You and Jenny meet inside the cottage to watch the barometer drop further.

Kevin verified the north piling shim is solid and the storm lashings hold, but the dock mooring ring remains loose in its mortise despite the oak wedges. Jenny found no new swelling or red streaks on her ankle, then moved the heirloom seed packets and tin inside to the kitchen table before the weather turns.

The barometer is at 970 and still falling. We need to get the heirloom seeds inside before the wind turns.

Walk out to the porch, gather the drying seed packets and the seed tin, and bring them to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this hits hard, the north ridge transect is lost and the seeds will rot.

I'll secure the dock lines and check the generator lashings. Back in ten.

walk out to the dock to double the mooring lines and verify the storm lashings on the generator

💭 peek at the thought
970 and falling fast. That's a proper low rolling in. The garden's going to take a beating but the seeds are irreplaceable. Good she's moving on them.

Stay dry if you can. The swell is coming in fast.

way at the kitchen table, unwrap the ankle brace, and check for new swelling or red streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in that surge? The tide is already too high for him playing with the pilings.

Won't be long.

reach the dock, pull the heavy weather line taut around the mooring ring and south piling, cinch the second stern spring, then move to the generator to ratchet down the storm straps

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the ankle close. Good. Infection's the real enemy out here. I'll check the lines quick and get back.

🌿 Jenny17:31

The tide is turning, Kevin! Don't stay out there if the surge hits!

stand by the window, watching the waves break over the north pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up too fast. If that swell catches the dinghy, it'll take the whole dock.

🔧 Kevin17:31

Checking the north piling shim. Two minutes.

walk to the north end of the dock, crouch at the greenheart sister plank, run fingers along the tapered shim under the piling toe to verify it's still seated solid, scan the bolts for any fresh movement

💭 peek at the thought
Surge is building. North piling's the weak point — greenheart sister's floating on a scoured void. Need to check the shim held at low tide. One look, then back inside.
