The Eve of the Storm
The air grows heavy and still as the flat sky deepens into charcoal grey. You and Jenny are inside the cottage, the first drops of rain beginning to tap the roof.
The storm finally broke with a heavy, driving rain that turned the world into a grey wall. Kevin spent the afternoon battling the elements, struggling to secure the dinghy as the tide rose and tugged at the dock, while Jenny stayed inside, managing the pain in her ankle and organizing the seeds while watching the rain lash the cottage windows.
Storm's here. You stay put — ankle, roof, radio. I'll check the dinghy and the garden tarp.
pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab LED headlamp, head out to the dock

Don't stay out long, the pressure is dropping too fast.
Take the heirloom seed tin from the kitchen table and move it to the driest spot on the high shelf above the radio.

Won't. Radio on 16 if anything changes.
step onto the porch, scan the dock and dinghy in the failing light, walk down the path to the dock

Jenny — gather the sea beet morphology sketches and the island notebook from the table and slide them into the waterproof casing.

Kevin — reach the dock, crouch at the mooring ring, test the oak wedges and doubler plate under foot pressure, check the heavy weather line and doubled stern spring for chafe, inspect the greenheart sister plank and scoured void beneath, shine head

Check the bow line again! The water is already turning!
Sit at the kitchen table and unwrap the ankle brace, checking for any return of heat.

Checking it now.
move to the dinghy bow, haul in the storm anchor warp hand over hand, feel for chafe at the chock and the eye bolt, check the anchor bite in the seabed, pull hard to test holding

Watch the tension on that spring! It's singing!
Press a cold cloth to the swollen skin of the ankle, wincing at the throb.

Easing the bow warp. Hold on.
pay out the storm anchor warp half a metre, cleat it off, watch the spring line tension drop, check the mooring ring mortise again for movement

The ring is shifting, Kevin! Watch the wood!
Stand up and move to the window, watching the rain turn into a grey wall.

Wedges are working. Ring's walking in the greenheart. I'm driving them home.
grab the mallet from the dock tool bag, drive the four vertical-grain oak wedges deeper into the mortise with heavy blows, watch the ring settle, check the doubler plate bolts for flex

Stop! You'll split the grain if you force them!
Lean against the window frame, gripping the sill, eyes fixed on the spray hitting the dock.
