The First Breath of the Storm

The first gust of wind hits the corrugated roof, rattling the tin mugs as the barometer begins its slow, inevitable drop.

The air is heavy with humidity as the overcast clouds press low over the island. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and salt lingers while the barometric continues its slow drop in pressure.

Not yet.

Jenny closes the notebook and places a heavy stone on the damp pages to keep the edges from curling.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming before the boat, and my ankle is throbbing with every shift.

0400's in six hours. Radio first, then the pine.

Walk to the porch and check the shortwave aerial tension, then secure the radio mast guy-lines against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming faster than the barometer said. She's not wrong about the notebook — salt air curls pages like old letters. But the radio check at 0400 matters more than dry paper.

Make sure the tension is right.

Jenny watches him through the screen, her hand instinctively resting over the pulsing heat in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Six hours is a long time to wait for the fever to break or hold.

Tension's held through worse. But I'll look.

Step onto the porch, grab the guy-line turnbuckles, and test each by hand — feeling for slack, checking the insulator bonds where the new porcelain sits sealed with self-amalgamating tape.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me like I'm the one who might break. Ankle's throbbing under that hand — she'd never admit it. Tension's fine, but I'll check anyway. Gives me a reason to be outside before the sky opens.

🌿 Jenny21:13

Check the bolts. The salt eats everything today.

Jenny leans back in the chair, watching the shadow of the mast move against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio goes down, I can't tell Tom about the infection.

The bracket bolts. Only finger-tight. Should've torqued them.

Pull the 10mm wrench from the tool belt, climb the short ladder to the mast bracket, and put proper torque on each of the four 150mm stainless through-bolts — 35Nm, same as the Yanmar housing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt gets into the threads before you blink. The through-bolts on the mast bracket were only finger-tight plus a quarter turn — not torqued proper. Should've done it weeks ago. Now the wind's rising and I'm checking bolts by flashlight.

🌿 Jenny21:15

Good. Don't let the wind catch the aerial.

Jenny reaches for her pencil, her fingers shaking slightly as she returns to the sketch of the sea much.

💭 peek at the thought
At least something is being tightened properly today.

🔧 Kevin21:15

Aerial's fast. Bolts held. Come 0400 I'll key the mic.

Descend the ladder, set the wrench on the porch rail, and stand a moment listening to the wind find the roof seams — then go inside to the radio shelf and power on the shortwave, letting the tubes warm.

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are shaking. Cold, or the infection creeping back? She won't say. The pencil's a distraction — sea beet morphology can wait. The aerial's secure now, bolts torqued. Radio check at 0400 is the only thing that matters tonight. And Tom's frequency.
