The Calm Before the Shift

The cloud cover dims further, and the wind picks up slightly from the east as the tide begins its slow turn.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks beneath the north piling. Kevin has finished bracing the dock, wedging the greenheart shims into the gap under the sister plank to prevent further shifting as the water drops. Jenny remains inside the cottage, the smell of brine and boiling limpets filling the small kitchen.

🌿 Jenny10:23

It's turning. The wind's shifting.

Carefully move the sea beet morphology sketches and the drying leaves further from the shutter leak.

💭 peek at the thought
The light is failing too fast. I need to get these samples properly dried before the humidity spikes again.

🔧 Kevin10:24

Aye. Slack in about two hours. I'll walk the dock line, check the sister plank while the water's dropping.

walk to the dock, inspect the greenheart sister plank and the temporary braces under the falling tide

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting east at 987 steady means the weather's holding for now, but the turn could bring chop against the outgoing tide. She's protecting the sketches — practical, quiet. Good. The transom bolts need checking at 0530 slack, but that's hours off. Right now the tide's turning, the wind's shifting, and the cottage leak still drips. I should walk the dock line while the light holds.

🌿 Jenny10:25

Be careful. If the tide's pulling hard, those braces might shift.

Limp slowly to the porch and lean against the railing, watching him work on the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, always fixing. I feel like a specimen pinned to a board while he's the one doing the collecting.

🔧 Kevin10:25

Will do. Holler if the bucket overflows.

step onto the dock, test the temporary braces with a boot, check the greenheart shim under the north piling toe at low water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — ebb current off the point can hit three knots. The spruce offcuts wedged under the beam are only holding by friction. If the scour void under the sister plank lets the piling settle, the braces pop loose. Need to check the shim under the north piling toe too. She's watching from the porch, ankle propped. Good place for her.

🌿 Jenny10:27

Jenny — limp back to the stove and put a small pot of water on to boil for some of those limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even walk to the door without a wince, and he's out there fighting the ocean. I need to eat something or I'm going to faint.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:27

Dock's holding. Braces firm, shim seated. Void under the sister plank still open —'ll need shims at 0530.

walk back to the cottage, peel off boots at the porch, step inside

💭 peek at the thought
Limpet broth for dinner. Salt and warmth. The braces hold — spruce offcuts wedged tight, no movement under boot. Greenheart shim under the north piling toe still seated, kerfs gripping. Sister plank solid on its three through-bolts, but the void underneath hasn't filled; water's dropping fast, exposing the scour. Come 0530 slack I'll need the come-along and more shims. For now the dock stands. Kettle's singing behind me. Smells like tide and metal.

🌿 Jenny10:29

Good. Just... don't overdo it. The barometer is still acting strange.

Stir the pot of limpets, the smell of brine and salt filling the small kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
0530. He's already planning tomorrow's battle with the tide. I wonder if he realizes how brittle I feel.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:29

Steady's the strange part. Kettle sounds done.

pour two mugs of limpet broth, set one on the table by her sketches, drink the other standing at the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She means steady when she says strange — 987 for hours, not rising, not falling. Unsettled. The kind that sits on you. Limpets boiling, steam on the windows. My boots drip on the porch boards. Ankle brace dry, no chafing. She's feeding us both without asking. I'll take the mug she doesn't use.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:31

Thank you.

Reach for the mug and take a slow sip, letting the warmth settle in my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient it's almost mechanical. He doesn't ask how the ankle feels; he just provides the fuel.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:31

Eat the limpets. Shells go in the garden for lime.

pull a stool over, crack a limpet shell with the back of my spoon, eat slow

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and iron on the tongue. She holds the mug with both hands, steam rising past the sea beet sketches. The leak drips into the bucket — plink, plink, plink. Radio dead on the shelf. Three days to the supply boat. Transom bolts at 0530. Tom's frequency at 0400. The barometer hasn't moved in six hours. My shoulder aches from the come-along yesterday. She watches me over the rim.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:33

I'll save the shells. I want to check the pH of the untreated beds tomorrow.

Carefully pick a limpet from the broth and eat it, leaning my head back against the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the lime. Everything here is a cycle—decay into growth, salt into soil. I just want to be the growth part for once.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:33

I'll bring the pH kit to the garden after the transom check. Four strips left.

finish the broth, set the mug down, pull on dry socks and boots

💭 peek at the thought
Untreated beds at 5.5 to 5.8 — lime'll help, but slow. She's thinking ahead, always thinking. The sketches on the table: sea beet salt glands, damping-off fuzz on pepper and lettuce. Her fingers brush the page edges, careful. Radio silent. Barometer steady. My spoon scrapes the tin bottom. Outside the wind's died to a breath. Slack tide in ninety minutes.
