Afternoon work at dock and garden
Kevin is at the dock inspecting the Yanmar engine vibration and mooring ring; Jenny is at the garden checking seedlings and heirloom seeds.
Kevin spent the afternoon at the dock watching the receding tide before eating a cold tin of corned beef with leftover limpets. Jenny worked in the garden to salvage the failing seedlings but ultimately decided the lettuce was too far gone to save.
You lean over the dinghy's transom where the Yanmar is mounted, the engine idling rough above half throttle. The prop shaft spins true with its new bronze sleeve, but the vibration persists — maybe the mast bracket alignment, maybe something deeper. The dock mooring ring shifts slightly under your boot, the cedar wedges holding for now. Cloud cover thickens overhead.

You kneel beside the seed trays in the sheltered garden, the heavy tarp rustling above. Pepper and lettuce cells show damping-off fuzz at the soil line — two more since morning. The heirloom tomato and basil at true leaf look healthy. You have the seed tin drying on paper, the mint poultice warming your ankle, and the barometer steady at 988.
Not today, not again.
Pick up the two heavily lettuce seedlings and place them in the newspaper bag for burning.
