Afternoon Stillness

The heavy air remains motionless as the humidity peaks. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen area as the tide continues its steady climb toward the dock.

Kevin inspected the south piling through-bolts and mooring ring mortise on the dock, applying penetrating oil to seized threads and checking oak wedges. Jenny examined heirloom seeds from the tin for moisture damage and mold while monitoring her ankle infection.

🌿 Jenny03:30

The tide is high. We need to check the moorings.

Jenny winces as she adjusts the poultice and looks at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with the rain; if this infection doesn't break, I'll never see those seeds in soil.

🔧 Kevin03:31

Aye. Let me grab the wrench and the light. You stay put — I'll look.

pick up the 19mm wrench and the LED headlamp from the shelf, pull on boots, and walk out to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. High tide means maximum load on the ring and the sister plank. If the greenheart's floating on a scoured void, the rising water could shift it. Need to check the wedges and the through-bolts before the slack.

🌿 Jenny03:31

Watch the south-side bolts, the salt is eating them today.

Jenny sits at the kitchen table and opens the seed tin to check for the scent of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks he's helping, but he's just avoiding the sight of the red climbing my leg.

🔧 Kevin03:33

South side. Got it.

walk down the porch steps onto the dock planking, headlamp beam cutting through the humid dusk, and crouch at the south piling to inspect the through-bolts and the greenheart sister plank alignment

💭 peek at the thought
South-side bolts. She's seen the corrosion I missed. Salt crust builds fast in this heat. Need to check the nylocs on the sister plank and the ring mortise — if the threads are gone, the wedges won't hold long.

🌿 Jenny03:33

Don't force the wrench, the wood is soft.

Jenny takes a handful of the heirloom seeds from the tin and inspects them for any sign of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts shear, the whole section goes, and I'm stuck here with no way to reach the boat.

🔧 Kevin03:34

Easy does it.

fit the 19mm wrench on the south-side through-bolt nut, apply slow steady pressure feeling for bite, watch the greenheart sister plank for any shift under the dock timbers

💭 peek at the thought
She knows every creak of this dock. Soft wood means the bolts will spin before they bite. Easy pressure, feel for the nyloc resistance. If the threads are stripped in the greenheart, no amount of torque helps — need longer bolts or a steel plate.

🌿 Jenny03:35

Use the oil if it won't turn.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, watching the red line on her calf through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The metal is fused with rust; if he pulls too hard, the bolt will snap.

🔧 Kevin03:37

Oil first. Then the wedges.

walk back to the porch, retrieve the penetrating oil can from the shelf, return to the south piling and spray the bolt threads liberally, then move to the mooring ring mortise to check the oak wedges for movement or crush

💭 peek at the thought
Penetrating oil on the south bolts. The can's on the porch shelf. Won't hurt to let it soak while I check the ring mortise wedges — if the oak's holding, the ring's the next weak point. She's watching the line on her leg like I watch the barometer. Neither of us likes what we see.
