Morning Lull

The tide is further out, exposing the rocks near the north shore. The clouds are thinning slightly, but the wet-season heat persists.

Kevin returns from the dock as the pressure begins to stabilize, noting the dip in the barometer has passed. Jenny is inside the cottage, debriding her leg with boiled water and managing the pain while checking the heirloom seed tin for any signs of rot from the rising humidity.

🔧 Kevin03:05

Going to the dock. Check the north piling and the transom sleeve while the tide's out. Back before the turn.

walk down to the dock, crouch at the north piling, run fingers along the greenheart shim line, check for movement or new scour, then move to the dinghy transom and inspect the bronze sleeve epoxy joint, tap it with the handle of the heavy w

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's low enough to check the north piling shim and the scoured void under the greenheart sister plank. If the water's dropped another foot I can see whether the shim's holding or if the piling's settled further. Also need to look at the transom bronze sleeve — last time the epoxy was tacky but the joint felt sound. Jenny's on the porch with her leg propped. She hasn't asked me to stay. She hasn't asked me to go.

Be careful with those bolts, the wood is slick.

Draw a precise pencil line around the edge of the tracking on my calf, then reach for the boiled water and poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line is moving. If it reaches the knee, I won't be able to walk to the spring, let alone forage.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Aye. Slow hands.

crouch at the north piling, press my palm flat against the greenheart shim where it meets the piling toe, feel for any give or water seepage, then shift to the transom and run a fingertip along the bronze sleeve epoxy bead, testing cure wit

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me even when she's tending her own wound. The pencil line — she's mapping the advance like a surveyor. Smart. Means she'll know if it jumps the margin before the naked eye catches it. Slick bolts, slick timber, rising tide behind me. I'll move slow.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Don't stay out too long, the barometer is dropping again.

Apply the boiled water to the wound, flinching as the heat stings, then wrap the leg in the fresh mint poultice and clean gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too slow. The infection doesn't wait for the tide to turn.

🔧 Kevin03:11

Shim's holding. Transom's sound. Coming in.

stand, step off the damp dock planks onto the shore path, walk back toward the cottage at a steady pace, glance at the barometer on the porch rail as I pass — 996 hPa and falling — then set the heavy wrench down on the workbench and sit on

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer dropping again. She felt it in her leg before I saw the needle move. The shim's solid — no play, no weep. Transom sleeve epoxy's cured hard, no crack lines. Good. But the tide's already turning; I can hear the channel filling. Five minutes before the current rips. Need to be off the dock planks.

🌿 Jenny03:15

Check the radio. The sky is turning.

Lean back against the chair, feeling the throb in my leg between heartbeats, and reach for the seed tin to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping. If the storm hits before the boat, I'm stuck here with this leg.

🔧 Kevin03:15

Checking.

walk to the radio shelf, lift the mic, flip the power, let the tubes warm, key the mic on 2182 kHz and speak the island's call sign and position, then release and listen for any return — coastguard, supply boat, static, anything

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's going the colour of old bruises. She reads it faster than the glass. Radio aerial insulator was shattered last storm — I bonded it with epoxy and self-amalgamating tape, held for weeks, but the tape's been peeling in this heat. If the wind picks up, the aerial whips and the ceramic takes the strain. Need to key the mic on 2182, see if the set even hears itself. And the supply boat's due in six days. If the coastguard's still gone, that boat's our only thread.

way but noise.

Open the tin of seeds, fingers trembling slightly as I lift the lid to check for any dampness or rot on the grandmother's heirloom.

💭 peek at the thought
static. Just the hiss of the atmosphere. My leg feels like it's melting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:17

Transmit's dead. Receive works. Aerial insulator tape's lifting. Needs re-seal before the blow.

set the mic down, pull the spare porcelain insulator and the roll of self-amalgamating tape from the shelf, check the tape's tack with a thumb, then move to the porch door and look up at the mast bracket where the aerial feeds through — ass

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing but noise. Same as yesterday. Same as the day before. The set receives fine — German newsfeed came through clear at 1400 — but transmit's deaf or the aerial's still bleeding signal into the wet ceramic. Tape's lifting at the edges. Wind'll finish it. I could climb the mast in this rising wind, re-tape the insulator, hope the epoxy holds another blow. Or I sit here and listen to static while the barometer drops and the supply boat fights a building sea six days out. Jenny's hands shake on the seed tin. She thinks I don't see.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:21

Wrap it tight. The wind is already picking up.

Watch the clouds bruise over the ridge, my hand resting on the throbing heat of my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that wire, it's gone. I can't call for help twice.
