The Squall Approaches

The wind lashes against the cottage shutters, and the rain turns to a horizontal sheet. The tide is rising rapidly, sending waves over the dock pilings.

Kevin checked the dock mooring ring and south piling at low tide, confirming the cedar wedges and through-bolts are holding despite the falling barometer. Jenny changed her ankle poultice and began de-salting sea beet leaves, but the infection line has not receded and her mood remains low.

🔧 Kevin05:15

Dock's singing. Going down to check the ring and the south piling while there's still beach to stand on.

Pull on oilskins and boots, grab the headlamp and the 19mm wrench, walk down to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping. Dock's taking real load now with tide and wind together. Need to check the ring and the south piling shim before the water gets any higher.

Take the radio, Kevin. The barometer is at 990 and falling.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle throbs, and move to the window to watch the waves hit the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for him to be out there; the swell is going to catch the dinghy.

Taking it.

Grab the handheld VHF from the shelf, clip it to the oilskin belt, check the battery indicator — dead, as expected — then take the shortwave handset off the hook and carry it out onto the porch, setting it on the rail where I can reach it f

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing west-northwest, tide pushing hard — if the ring works loose or the shim fails, I'll need to call it in. And if I go over, the radio's the only way anyone finds me.

🌿 Jenny05:17

Kevin, if the swell takes the boat, use the whistle!

grab my own and a pencil, sitting at the kitchen table to sketch the way the water is lashing under the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's taking the shortwave because the way is dead; he's going to be out there.

🔧 Kevin05:19

Whistle's on me. Back in a few.

Step off the porch onto the shingle, headlamp beam cutting the rain, walk down the beach to the dock's landward end.

💭 peek at the thought
Whistle's on the lanyard around my neck — has been since the Bay of Biscay. She knows that. But she said it anyway because the water's climbing the porch steps and the dock's groaning like a living thing.

🌿 Jenny05:19

Watch the lines, Kevin!

stand up, wrap the sweater tighter around my waist, and watch through the glass as his headlamp disappears into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in too fast for the dock; the swell is going to be heavy.

🔧 Kevin05:21

(nothing — wind takes anything I'd say)

Clamber onto the dock planking, crouch at the mooring ring, swing the headlamp beam down the mortise — check the oak wedges, the through-bolts, the nyloc nuts. Then move to the south piling, feel for movement at the shim.

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are the least of it — the stern spring and breast line I doubled yesterday are holding. It's the ring bolt in the mortise and the greenheart shim under the south piling toe that'll decide whether the dock stays where it is. Water's up to the lower bearer already.

🌿 Jenny05:21

Come back, you idiot.

move to the stove, check the thermometer, then sit back down and rub my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If that swell catches the dinghy, he's going with it.

🔧 Kevin05:23

Holding.

Turn back up the beach, headlamp picking out the cottage porch, climb the steps and push through the door, shaking rain off the oilskin.

💭 peek at the thought
Ring mortise — wedges swollen tight, bolts firm, nylocs seated. South piling — greenheart shim holding, no play I can feel. Dock's taking it. For now.

🌿 Jenny05:23

You're shivering. way inside.

stand up, walk to the kitchen, grab a dry towel from the hook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaked to the bone. The tide is turning fast.
