Morning Tasks and Radio Attempt

Kevin and Jenny are in the keeper's cottage. Kevin is at the workbench reinforcing the dock mooring ring with oak wedges and through-bolts, while Jenny is at the table changing the sea beet water and monitoring her ankle. The 0400 shortwave attempt with Tom is approaching.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shore. Kevin finishes drilling the four through-bolt holes in the oak plank for the mooring ring reinforcement, the fine sawdust lingering in the humid air. Jenny sits at the bench, rinsing the salt-crusted sea beet leaves in a bowl of fresh water, her ankle throbbing as the clouds thicken further above the island.

Kevin — drill through-bolt holes in oak plank for dock mooring ring reinforcement

💭 peek at the thought
The drill bit bites into oak. Four new holes for through-bolts, staggered so the grain doesn't split. Cedar wedges held through the last high tide but they're soft — they'll crush under sustained load. Oak's the only thing that'll last. Barometer's falling. If the supply boat's coming in ten days, this dock needs to take her weight without the ring walking out of its mortise. 0400's in twenty minutes. Radio's on the shelf, new coax run, spare insulator seated and taped. I'll try Tom's frequency again. He won't answer. He hasn't in eleven months. But the equipment works now. That's something.

The salt is still too high in these. I'll need one more soak.

Drain the salt water from the bowl and rinse the leaves with fresh water.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure in my ankle is pulsing with the tide, but the sea beet is finally softening.

Kevin — finish drilling the four through-bolt holes in the oak plank, then countersink for bolt heads and washers

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. One more rinse, then blanch, then chop for the pot with the corned beef. Her ankle's quiet now — poultice held through the night, no fresh weeping. If the beet's still pulling salt, it means the tide pools haven't flushed enough since the last spring tide. Or the plants are stressed from the wind. I'll check the transect stakes tomorrow — see if the northern patch is holding up better.

🌿 Jenny09:31

Make sure the counters are deep, Kevin. I don't want the rope catching on the hardware.

Clear the sawdust from the workbench and organize the stainless steel bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts aren't flush, the whole assembly will shear out when the next surge hits.

🔧 Kevin09:31

Countersinks will sit flush. Peen the threads after torque.

countersink the four bolt holes deep for nyloc nuts, then blow out sawdust and test-fit the 150mm stainless through-bolts with flat washers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Stern line and spring lines run right past that ring. A proud bolt head catches a chafe point once, it'll saw through half-inch three-strand in a single blow. I'll countersink deep enough for the nyloc nuts to sit flush, then peen the threads. No snag points. She knows the loads. She's watched me rig this dock through three winters now.

🌿 Jenny09:33

Just don't over-torque yet. I need to see if the alignment holds first.

Check the ankle for new swelling and adjust the dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the metal because he can't look at the rot in me.

🔧 Kevin09:33

Finger-tight plus a quarter. Let the tide seat it. Ten minutes to 0400.

snug the four through-bolts finger-tight plus a quarter turn, wipe hands on rag, and walk to the radio shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the structure, not just the hardware. The ring's alignment in the mortise — if the oak wedges shift when I torque the bolts, the whole bearing surface changes. She wants to see the ring sit true under the doubler plate before the nylocs lock it down. Smart. I'll snug them finger-tight plus a quarter turn, same as the mast bracket. Let the tide cycle seat it. 0400 in ten minutes. Need to wipe down and get to the radio.

🌿 Jenny09:35

I'll check the antenna tension while you watch the frequency.

way on the porch chair and elevate the ankle on a pillow.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. The storm is coming before I can even reach Tom.
