The Rising Tide

The rain shows no sign of slackening, and the tide reaches the lower planks of the dock. The pair must decide how to protect the garden from the encroaching salt spray before the humidity peaks.

Kevin and Jenny secured the tarp over the garden's south wall using driftwood weights and oak stakes despite high tide and wind. The coconut crab disturbed seedlings overnight, damaging some plants. Both are now apart, Kevin at the cottage and Jenny at the north cliffs, continuing their individual tasks.

🌿 Jenny11:23

The tide is too high, Kevin. We need to get the tarp over the south wall before the wind shifts.

stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and move toward the garden shed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt hits those seedlings, the whole season is gone before the way even arrives. I need to move the tarp but my leg is screaming.

I'll run the tarp. You stay on the porch and call out where the spray's hitting.

grab the spare tarp and oak stakes from the shed, jog down the path to the garden's south wall

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's already licking the dock planks and the wind's backing southeast — salt spray will hit the south beds within the hour. She's right, but that ankle can't take the wet shingle path. I'll take the tarp and the stakes; she directs from the porch.

🌿 Jenny11:25

Watch the northeast corner! The wind is whipping around the bend—it's hitting the tomatoes first!

limp to the edge of the porch and point toward the spray-drenched rows.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a lookout now. Fine. I'll be the eyes since he's the muscle.

Got it. Holding the corner now.

snap the tarp's northeast grommet over an oak stake, drive it deep into the wet soil, and pull the tarp taut along the south wall, staking every metre as I go

💭 peek at the thought
The spray's already stinging the tomato leaves at the northeast corner—if we don't seal that gap now, the salt will burn through the row by tonight. I'll stake the tarp low and tight there first, then work the rest of the wall.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Secure the bottom edge! The wind is gusting now—it'll lift the whole thing!

lean over the railing, watching the tarp strain against the stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast. If that wind catches the flap, it'll rip the stakes right out of the mud.

🔧 Kevin11:27

Weighting it now.

grab armfuls of driftwood from the tide line and shove them along the tarp's bottom hem, then wedge the tool bag over the centre section to pin it down

💭 peek at the thought
The gusts are catching the tarp's belly — if the bottom edge lifts, the whole sheet becomes a sail and rips the stakes out. Need to weight it with whatever's heavy and close: driftwood, stones, the tool bag.
