Pre-storm lull

The wind picks up slightly as the temperature drops a few degrees. You and Jenny meet at the garden to check the final lashings before the rain breaks.

Kevin spent the afternoon reinforcing the garden shade cloth with new stakes and lines to prepare for the coming storm. Jenny managed her fever while resting while Kevin dejected her ankle and applied a fresh mint poultice.

Let's finish these corner lashings quick. Wind's shifting—we don't have much time.

walk to northeast corner of garden, grab rope end, pull tight around oak stake, tie secure double-hitch, move to northwest corner, repeat, then southwest, then southeast, checking each lash for slippage as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's picking up and the barometer's dropping—storm's coming faster than I thought. Jenny's ankle is worse, but she's here. I need to get these lashings tight before the rain hits and then get her inside.

🌿 Jenny18:39

Just make sure the stakes are deep. The barometer is dropping too fast today.

Lean weight onto my good leg, wincing as the movement sends a spike of heat through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, this infection will go through the bone before I can open that seed tin.

Stakes going deeper. You sit. Don't need you going down on that ankle.

grab mallet from tool bag, drive northeast oak stake three solid hits deeper into soil, check line tension, move to northwest stake, repeat, then southwest, then southeast, each stake driven until only six inches show above ground.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer dropping fast means this isn't just a squall. And she's in pain—worse than she's letting on. I'll drive the stakes deeper while she watches the line tension.

🌿 Jenny18:41

I can sit. way... make sure the anchors hold when the wind hits.

Sink back against the rough stone wall, breathing through the fever as I watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile, but I'm just too tired to argue while I bleed out.

🔧 Kevin18:43

Last stake's going in. Hold on—we're almost done.

drive southeast stake three hard hits with mallet until firm, give each line a sharp tug to test hold, then coil spare rope, walk to Jenny, slide arm under hers, help her stand slow, walk her step by step toward cottage door, keeping her we

💭 peek at the thought
She's fading fast—fever's pulling her under. If the wind hits before the boat comes, the shade cloth will tear and take the seedlings with it. Anchors have to hold. I'll finish the stakes, then get her inside before the first rain.

way get them tight. The air tastes like salt and rot already.

Lean heavily against his side, eyes blurring as I watch the garden throb in time with the pulse.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the shade cloth, the seedlings will be shredded before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin18:45

I've got you. One step at a time. Porch is close.

tighten grip around her waist, match her pace slow and steady, carry most of her weight up the three porch steps, through the door, lower her onto the settee, pull blanket from the pile, tuck it around her legs, press back of hand to her fo

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up. The infection's taken hold deeper than the antibiotics can reach without IVs. Boat's a day out if it comes at all. I need her horizontal, cooled, and dosed before she crashes. The garden's done—anchors hold. Nothing else matters now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:45

It's okay. way... check the poultice later.

Close my eyes, letting my head fall against the cushion as the wind howls through the thatch.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is radiating off my skin; I can feel the infection climbing up my calf.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:46

(quiet) Rest now. I'll wake you for meds.

walk to kitchen counter, unwrap honey-garlic poultice from jar, spread thick on clean cloth strip, fill tin mug with water, set doxycycline and metronidazole tablets on cloth beside mug, sit on stool beside settee, wait and watch her breath

💭 peek at the thought
She's out. Fever's got her deep. Poultice needs changing, meds need swallowing, fluids need drinking—none of it happens if she's unconscious. I'll let her rest ten minutes while I get the honey-garlic mix ready, clean cloth, fresh water. Then wake her enough to dose.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:47

I'm awake. Just... let me sit.

Reach for the mug, feeling the throbbing heat in my ankle under the blanket.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too quiet, and it makes me want to scream at the sky.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:49

Take the pills first. Whole mug after.

hold out two doxycycline and two metronidazole tablets on palm, wait until she takes them, press mug into her hands, guide it to her lips, make sure she drinks it all, then peel back blanket, unwind old poultice strips, clean wound with boi

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's conscious enough to swallow. Ankle's hot through the blanket—infection's still raging. Need her to take both antibiotics and drink the whole mug. Then fresh poultice on the wound.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:49

I took them. Don't touch it yet.

Swallow the pills hard, wincing as he touches the area near the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is cold, but my skin feels like fire. Everything is pulsing.
