Night on the Island

The sun has dipped below the horizon, leaving the island in a warm twilight. The trade wind continues to hum through the radio mast, and the sound of the tide against the dockings is constant.

Kevin checked the radio one last time before bed, hearing only a fragment of a news broadcast about Ukraine's Starshield access. He offered Jenny a damp gauze for her hot ankle, and they both settled in for the night.

I'm tired, Kevin. I'm going to sleep.

Put the tin of seeds back on the shelf, walk to the bedroom, and lie down.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with the tide; I need to keep this infection from spreading before the boat arrives or I'll never plant those seeds.

Sleep well. I’ll be up a bit longer—checking the radio before I turn in.

Walk to the radio shelf, pick up the mic, and key it briefly on Tom’s frequency—just enough to send a single click into the static, then return it to the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The quiet after she leaves is heavier than the wind. I keep thinking about the letter in my pocket—four lines, not enough. Tom’s silence feels like a door shut, but I left it cracked open with that radio burst at 0300. I should’ve said more. I should’ve said I’m still trying.

Goodnight.

Roll onto my side, pull the covers up, and try to ignore the heatradi from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking that radio, like a signal is actually going to save him from the silence here.

Kevin — pour a small amount of clean water into a bowl, dip a strip of gauze in it, then wring it out lightly. Carry it to the bedroom doorway and pause, listening to her breathing.

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle’s still bothering her. I saw her wince when she sat down. The mint poultice helps, but it’s not fixing what’s underneath. I should check the dressing in the morning—clean it, rewrap it tight. First aid’s not my strength, but I can follow the steps.

Jenny — close my eyes tight and focus on the rhythmic pulse in my shin.

💭 peek at the thought
If he comes in here with that water, I'll have to move. I'm not in the mood for caretaking.

Ankle still hot?

Lean against the doorframe, gauze in hand, waiting.

💭 peek at the thought
She's awake. She's hurting. Won't say it. Neither will I.
