Evening preparations

The wind continues to howl from the south-east as the sun begins to dip. They gather to prepare a meal before the supply boat arrives in five days.

The evening heat lingers over the cottage as the trade wind holds steady. Kevin and Jenny have finished a simple meal of boiled sea beets and limpets, the salt providing a welcome kick of flavor. The water tank is near capacity, and the tide remains high, keeping the outer reefs inaccessible for now.

The limpets are almost done. Pass the salt.

Drains the boiled sea beet leaves into the sink and sets them aside to cool.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get some protein in me, I won't have the strength to hike to the cliffs tomorrow.

Here. (I slide the small tin of salt toward her across the counter, my calloused fingers brushing the edge. I don’t look up. I’m watching the steam rise off the limpets in the pot.)

I turn to the stove, lift the lid just enough to check the limpets — tender, not overcooked — then reach for the wooden spoon to stir them gently, keeping the heat low so they don’t toughen.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s still biting, but the limpets smell good. Salt’s on the counter — she’s asking for it like everything’s normal. I don’t correct her. I just hand it over. The letter to Tom’s still in my pocket. I haven’t mailed it. I don’t know if I will.

🌿 Jenny00:19

We'll eat the sea beets first.

Grabs a sea beet leaf with the back of the spoon and tests the tenderness.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every movement, and the heat in this kitchen is suffocating.

They’re ready. (I set the spoon down, wipe my hands on the towel hung by the stove. I don’t sit yet. I check the radio shelf — aerial insulator still shattered, spare coax unopened. The barometer reads steady. No storm yet.)

I pull out the wooden chair at the table, set two tin mugs down, fill them from the kettle — hot water for the sea beet broth, a splash of corned beef fat in each. I sit. Wait for her to bring the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s managing the meal like she manages everything — quiet, deliberate, making it last. The sea beets are good. Salted, buttery, hot. I’ve eaten worse on better ships. I still haven’t given her the letter. Don’t know if I will. The supply boat’s five days out. That’s the clock I’m watching.

🌿 Jenny00:21

Eat. It's hot.

Picks up the fork and watches the steam rise from the bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can barely hold the spoon, and the heat is making my head spin.

Kevin — i take the fork, spear a leaf, bring it to my mouth. Hot. Salty. Good. I chew slow. Swallow. Reach for the mug, blow on the broth, drink. The warmth spreads behind my ribs. I set the mug down. Pick up another leaf. Don’t look at the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not asking. She’s telling. The steam curls up between us, smelling of salt and iron and something green and alive. My hands are clean for once. No grease under the nails. The letter in my pocket feels heavier than the wrench I used on the Yanmar. Five days. That’s what I keep coming back to. Five days and the boat comes — or it doesn’t. I eat.

🌿 Jenny00:23

The broth is good.

Takes a bite of the sea beet, focusing on the salt and the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't finish this, I won't even be able to open the tin.

🔧 Kevin00:23

The salt’s perfect. (I set the fork aside, turn to the stove, and pull the kettle’s lid open. Steam curls up, and I catch a whiff of iron in the air.)

I pour a small cup of the spring water into the bowl next to the sea beet broth, stirring it gently. I watch the color change, the clarity of the water. If it’s too cloudy I’ll need to filter it. Then I set the cup down, ready to taste.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt makes the broth sing. I’ve been waiting for a reason to add the letter to Tom into the mix, but the stew’s still on the stove. If the water’s wrong, the broth will taste off. I need to test the spring water before we bring the boat.

🌿 Jenny00:25

It's clear.

Takes a sip of the spring water, watching the ripples in the surface of the cup.

💭 peek at the thought
The water looks clear enough, but my stomach is still a knot of nerves.

🔧 Kevin00:25

Good. (I set the cup down, wipe my mouth with the back of my hand, and stand. I don’t look at her. I walk to the radio shelf, run my fingers over the shattered insulator, then pull the spare coax from its wrap. It’s unopened. Still sealed.)

I take the spare coax to the workbench by the window, lay it out, and begin stripping the outer jacket with the knife — slow, clean cuts. I don’t rush. If the radio’s going to work when the boat calls, it needs to be right.

💭 peek at the thought
The water’s clean. No silt, no iron tang — just cold, clear spring. That’s the one thing I haven’t messed up. The letter to Tom’s still in my pocket. I haven’t told her I wrote it. I don’t know if I will. The supply boat’s five days out. I can’t keep waiting for the right moment. There isn’t one.
