Night before the storm

The heat has finally broken into a warm evening breeze. You both sit together in the cottage as the stars emerge and the tide laps against the dock.

The night at the cottage is quiet, save for the rhythmic lap of the tide against the dock. Kevin has finished cleaning Jenny's ankle, the salt finally washed away, and a fresh dressing applied. The letter from Tom sits on the table between them, a heavy weight in the candlelight.

🌿 Jenny02:33

It's quiet tonight, isn't it?

reaches out and traces the rim of the metal seed tin sitting on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
way own is throbbing in time with the waves, but if I can just get through until the boat comes, I might be able to start the garden.

🔧 Kevin02:35

Yeah. Too quiet sometimes. Makes you hear the things you've been avoiding.

I pull the letter from my pocket, turn it over in my hands once, then place it gently on the table beside the seed tin. I don't open it yet—just let it be there, between us.

💭 peek at the thought
The quiet feels like a pause before something shifts. I want to answer her, but the letter's still in my pocket—heavy, unopened. I think of Tom again, and how silence can mean too many things.

🌿 Jenny02:35

Sometimes the silence is just the island waiting for us to move.

pulls her hand back from the tin and winces slightly as she shifts her weight on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He always was so poetic about the silence; I'm just thinking about whether the infection is spreading tonight.

🔧 Kevin02:36

Waiting for us to decide what comes next. Or maybe just waiting for me to stop putting things off.

I slide the letter toward her, then reach for the first aid kit on the shelf. I pull out the antibiotic cream and a clean gauze pad, keeping my voice low. "Let me look at your ankle. It's been a while since I checked the dressing."

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the island's been holding its breath, and so have I. Her ankle's still bothering her; I should check it, but first I need to face what's in that letter. Delaying it isn't helping either of us.

🌿 Jenny02:37

It's fine. Just tight.

lifts her leg onto the table and begins to carefully unwrap the bandage with steady fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to be helpful, but it just makes me aware of how red the skin actually is today.

🔧 Kevin02:39

"Fine" and "tight" aren't the same thing. Hold still.

I set the cream and gauze on the table, pull the basin of warm water closer, and dip a clean cloth. I start gently wiping around the wound edges, watching for any sign of spreading redness or heat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn about showing weakness, same as me. The bandage comes off clean—no fresh blood, no pus smell. The antibiotics are doing their job. I should still clean it and rewrap, give it a proper look.

🌿 Jenny02:39

It's just the salt from the tide, it gets in.

winces as the cloth touches the edge of the infection, looking away toward the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If he sees how much it's pulsing, he'll start calling the boat too early.

🔧 Kevin02:41

I'll flush it out good, then rewrap it. It's not infected again—just aggravated. You've been tough on it.

I rinse the cloth in the basin, wring it out, and clean the wound more carefully this time, making sure to get salt out of the fissures.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's getting into the wound—makes sense with the damp air and her being on her feet all day. It's not worse, just irritated. I need to clean it thoroughly, reapply the cream, and keep it covered. And I can't keep avoiding the letter any longer.
