← Day 493

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the garden

Afternoon Lull

The tide is further out now as the sun begins its slow descent.

Kevin spent the afternoon checking the Yanmar engine and preparing the dock for the supply boat's arrival. Jenny worked in the garden, documenting the sea beet morphology in her notebook while managing her ankle's inflammation.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You fold the letter and tuck it back into the oilskin pouch for safety.

🔧 Kevin04:09

Kevin — walk down to the dock, kneel at the mooring ring, and probe the cedar shims with my pocket knife to see if they’ve shifted or compressed under load.

💭 peek at the thought
I’ll check the dock mooring ring at low tide — the shims may have settled, and I won’t sleep till I know it’s solid.

🔧 Kevin04:13

Kevin — walk back up to the cottage, fill the kettle from the rain tank, and set it on the stove to boil while I check the Yanmar’s oil level with the dipstick.

💭 peek at the thought
The shims are still tight — no play, no gap. The ring holds. I can trust it till the boat comes.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You limp back to the cottage wall, seeking shade and to elevate the swelling.

🌿 Jenny04:11

Jenny — sit on the low stone wall, prop my ankle up on a flat rock, and peel back the gauze to check the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is making the pulse sharper. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to lose the leg.

🌿 Jenny04:15

Jenny — reach for my pencil to draw a new circle around the edge of the infection on my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's spreading. I can see the red line moving further up my calf since morning.
