Midday work and a shared meal
Kevin is at the dock reworking the float needle; Jenny is at the garden mulching the acidic beds.
No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.
You sit at the dockside bench with the carburetor in pieces, a fresh brass rod chucked in the hand drill to turn a second needle. The NE wind is steady now, 12–15 knots, whipping spray off the pilings. The barometer still reads 1015 but the cloud stack to northeast looks lower, darker.
Christ, that spray is cold.
Check the barometer reading one more time, then decide whether to finish the dinghy engine first or try stepping the mast before the wind shifts.

Kevin — anneal the brass rod quick over the torch, let it cool slow while I walk the spruce spar down to the dinghy and check the step fitting one more time.

You spread seaweed mulch over the low-pH beds, working it in with the hand fork. The wind carries the smell of fermenting fruit from the woods and the tang of salt. Your notebook lies open on a flat rock, pH readings inked in. The sky has gone the colour of bruised slate.
Stay down, just one more hour.
Wipe the grit from the notebook pages and tuck it into my pocket.

Jenny — stand up, wipe dirt from my knees, and walk toward the cottage.
