The Rising Deluge

The rain intensifies as the tide begins to turn. Kevin is still at the dock struggling with the structure while Jenny emerges from the treeline, soaked and exhausted.

Kevin reinforces the water tank overflow trench to prevent the pooling from undermining the dock foundation. Jenny attempts to secure the loose oarlock bracket on the dinghy but struggles with the heavy bolts in the humid heat.

🔧 Kevin19:23

Jenny! Come help me wedge these before the turn — oak shims in the mortise, then we drive them home as the water rises. It's the only way this holds.

Grab two soaked oak shims from the pile, jam them into the dock mooring ring mortise where it's loose, then brace myself to hold them in place as Jenny arrives.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's winning. Every plank I lay gets sucked sideways. Jenny's out there in the rain, ankle wrapped, and I'm stuck here trying to hold back a tide with scrap wood. I should've listened when she said the trench wasn't enough. Now we're both getting soaked for nothing.

🌿 Jenny19:23

I'm here. Just tell me where to push.

Lean my weight against the piling to keep the shims steady while Kevin reaches for the hammer.

💭 peek at the thought
If my ankle gives out now, I won't be able to get back before the tide hits.

Hammer's in my belt — take it. Hit the shim flush, hard, seat it into the mortise. I'll hold the piling from kicking out.

Wrench my grip on the piling to stop it from rolling, jaw tight, eyes on the shim as Jenny swings the hammer — drive it home before the rising water breaks our hold.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing with her whole body, soaked through, ankle wrapped tight, and she's not complaining. I can feel the piling shudder under her weight — the tide's turning, water's lifting under the dock. If we don't seat these shims now, it'll wash them out.

I've got it. Hold steady.

Swing the hammer with a heavy grunt, driving the

If I don't get this tight, the whole way will shear off by high tide.

Second shim — same spot, opposite side. Hit it true, Jenny. We lock it now or we rebuild this whole damn thing next week.

Shift my weight to counter the piling's twist, left hand braced on the wet timber, right hand ready to catch the hammer rebound — eyes locked on the shim as Jenny lifts for the second strike.

💭 peek at the thought
The shim's biting — good oak, dense grain. Jenny's swing is true, hammer biting deep despite the rain slicking the wood. I can feel the piling settle under my hands, the mortise gripping tight. One down, one to go — we've got a window before the peak tide lifts again.

🌿 Jenny19:27

Almost there. Almost.

Brace my shoulder against the piling, leaning all my weight into the wood to keep the shims from shifting as Jenny strikes.

💭 peek at the thought
One more hit and it should seat. I just need to hold the pressure.

🔧 Kevin19:28

Easy… easy… that's it. Hold — don't let go yet. Water's lifting, but the shims are seated. We got it.

Keep my weight locked into the piling, shoulders burning, feel the dock settle under us as the tide peaks — then, slow, ease the pressure, testing if the ring holds on its own.

💭 peek at the thought
Her shoulder's jammed into the piling, rain streaming off her jaw, and she's not yielding. The shim's seated now — I can feel it, no play, the wood biting hard. We've got it. The tide's turning, but the ring's held. For now.

🌿 Jenny19:29

It's solid. Look.

way release my weight from the wood, watching the mortise for any groans as the water pulls at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If this holds, the whole foundation won't go down with the tide.
