Evening meal and weather watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with a tin of corned beef between them. The generator hums outside. Rain hammers the roof in bursts. The barometer reads 982 hPa. They eat in the dim light, listening to the wind rise.

Kevin launched the dinghy into the turning tide and rowed hard for the lighthouse to secure the mast and check the aerial before the weather broke. Jenny, left behind, forced the waterlogged crate open and found tinned provisions and new rope, but her ankle gave out when she stood too fast and she fell back into the chair.

🔧 Kevin00:26

Eat the fat too. You need the calories.

push the tin toward her with two fingers, then reach for the radio handset and key the mic on Channel 16 without waiting for a reply

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating slower than yesterday. The fork trembles in her hand when she thinks I'm not watching. That red line on her leg has crossed the knee — I saw it when she shifted on the stool. The last antibiotic was three days ago. We're down to aspirin and hope.

🌿 Jenny00:29

I'm not that hungry, Kevin.

Take a piece of meat with the fork, watching his hand move on the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks calories will fix an infection that's literally climbing up my shin.

🔧 Kevin00:29

— Nothing heard. Out.

set the handset back in its cradle with deliberate care, then pick up my own fork and cut a piece of corned beef, chewing slowly to show it stays down

💭 peek at the thought
She's lying. She's always hungry now — the fever burns through whatever she gets down. But the swelling in her throat makes swallowing feel like swallowing glass, and she won't admit it. Won't make me feel worse. That's the cruelest thing she does.

🌿 Jenny00:30

The pressure is falling too fast.

Reach for the compress and press it back firmly against the swelling of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; that boat isn't coming in this weather.

🔧 Kevin00:30

Six hours. Maybe less.

stand and move to the porch door, unhook the oilskin and pull it on in one motion, boots already by the threshold

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the barometer from the table — smart, observant, dying. 982 and dropping like a stone. West wind backing southwest. The notch in the hilltop funnels it straight down the valley into the cottage. We got maybe six hours before the gusts hit fifty. The dinghy's still on blocks. Mast stepped but reef points untested. Engine mount bolts I checked this morning held, but the vibration at full throttle could walk them loose in a following sea.

🌿 Jenny00:32

Don't go alone. The tide is turning.

Put the fork down and lean back, watching him through the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there now, he'll slip on the rocks and break.

🔧 Kevin00:32

Stay in the chair. Radio on 16. If I'm not back in forty minutes, you call Mayday. Position, nature of distress, souls on board: two.

pause at the door, keys in hand — the dinghy's kill cord — then clip it to my belt and step out into the rain without waiting for an answer

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The ebb's making the channel confused — wind against tide, standing waves at the bar. I know these waters. I also know what a swamped dinghy looks like in the dark. But the generator's exhaust needs clearing before the rain drives water back into the cylinder, and the tarp over the seed stores is flapping loose. Two jobs. One me. She can't walk the dock. Not with that leg.

🌿 Jenny00:34

Kevin! Wait!

Stand up too quickly, wincing as the ankle spikes, and grab the edge of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to kill himself trying to be a hero for a ghost.
