The Rising Tide

The water is now touching the lower stones of the shrine. The air is heavy with the coming humidity.

The rain continues to fall steadily, filling the water tank as it nears its 400-litre limit. The tide has risen rapidly, waves lapping over the dock planks and threatening the makeshift stone barrier at the shrine. Kevin and Jenny have worked together to protect the structure from the incoming swell.

🌿 Jenny00:13

Jenny — pull my ankle out of the salt water bucket, wince, and limp back toward the way door.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide rises any higher, the shrine is going to be underwater, and I need to get back inside before my head starts spinning.

🔧 Kevin00:14

I’ll grab the dry bandages from the kit. Stay off it as much as you can.

walk to cottage, open first aid kit, take clean gauze and antibiotic cream, return to Jenny, kneel beside her, gently lift her foot, clean off salt water with fresh water from canteen, pat dry, apply cream, wrap ankle snug but not tight wit

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s taken the shrine’s stones. Jenny’s ankle’s bad—she’s favoring it, moving slow. I should’ve checked the drain earlier. Now it’s creeping up on everything. I’ll secure the dock first, then see what I can do for her before the rain gets worse.

🌿 Jenny00:15

The tide is coming in too fast for the shrine.

lean back against the rough cottage wood, watching the water lap over the dock planks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but bandages don't stop the rain or the rot.

🔧 Kevin00:16

I’ll rig something to break the swell before it hits the shrine. Help me drag the long planks from the beach if you can stand.

limp toward beach, grab two longest driftwood planks, haul them back toward shrine, wedge them vertically into the sand at an angle to deflect incoming waves, stack smaller logs behind for weight, test stability by pushing against current f

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the water’s already at the shrine’s base, and it’s only going up. If we don’t move something now, we’ll lose the lower stones for good. I can’t stop the tide, but I can try to shield what’s left. I’ll use the driftwood and planks we salvaged—build a quick breakwater to take the edge off.

🌿 Jenny00:17

I'll help, but don't expect me to do all the heavy lifting.

push myself off the wall, favoring my good leg, and head toward the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
If I go out there now, the infection will give way, but if the shrine goes, the seeds are lost too.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:18

I’m right behind you. Let’s get the planks in place and weight them down with the spare rocks from the north pile—those should hold.

follow Jenny to jetty, scan for usable timber, grab two soaked but solid planks, carry them toward shrine, position them in a V-shape pointing seaward to split the flow, jam butt ends deep into sand, pile loose stones and rubble at base to

💭 peek at the thought
She’s in pain but moving—good sign. She’s going to the jetty, maybe to see how bad the dock’s getting or to grab more wood. I’ll follow her lead but keep the focus on the shrine. We need to act fast before the next surge undermines the stones completely.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny00:19

Watch the current, it's pulling harder than it looks.

reach for the edge of the first plank, grunting as I lean my weight against it to help Kevin guide it into the sand.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already over the stones; if these planks don't hold, the whole thing washes out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:20

On three—push hard and hold. One, two, three—now!

throw shoulder against plank, drive it deep into sand with Jenny’s help, wiggle to seat it firm, grab second plank, repeat on other side to form V-breakwater, pile driftwood and stones against base to brace against pull, test by leaning int

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the current’s stronger than it looks, sucking at the planks as we try to set them. One wrong move and we’ll lose them to the drag. We need to get them buried fast and deep, or they’ll just float off. I’ll use my weight to drive it in while she guides the angle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny00:21

It's moving! Get the rocks on the base quickly!

lean my full weight against the second plank, teeth gritted as a wave washes over my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already at my shins and the salt is stinging the wound. We have to get this set now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:22

I’m on it—grabbing the biggest chunks from the north pile. Hold that plank steady!

sprint to north pile, heave two large, flat stones into arms, stagger back to shrine, drop them hard against the base of both planks, add smaller rocks to fill gaps, stomp down to settle, brace against next wave with shoulder, shout over ro

💭 peek at the thought
The wave just hit her—she’s bracing hard, but the water’s tugging at the planks. If we don’t weigh them down now, they’ll shift or wash out. I need to get the heaviest rocks we can find and stack them fast at the base to lock it in place.
