Approaching Squall

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

Kevin completed the final engine check on the dinghy, confirming the spare spark plug works and fuel is clean, then secured the grab bag with flares, water, charts, and the spare plug in the bow locker using the new half-inch line. Jenny sorted the damp heirloom seed packets, boiled the remaining limpets for protein, and sketched her swollen ankle in the notebook before both settled in to wait out the rain.

Engine held steady on the stand. Spare plug works. Fuel's clean. But the channel's going to be confused — wind against tide. We leave 0530 sharp, or we don't go.

Set the spare spark plug on the kitchen table beside the charts, then pull out the grab bag and start checking the flares are dry.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's heavier than forecast. She's watching me — knows the engine's the only thing between us and staying. Need to tell her straight: it runs, but the sea state's the variable.

🌿 Jenny01:08

0530 is too early for the light, but I'll be ready.

Jenny gathers the damp seed packets from the table and wraps a cloth around her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide turns, I won't even be able to climb into the dinghy, let alone navigate the channel.

First light's 0545. We'll have the buoy flash at 0600 on the nose. Radio check at 2200 — if the supply boat answers, we hold. If not, we run the window.

Walk to the shortwave on the shelf, switch it on, and let the tubes warm while the static climbs.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not arguing the time. That's something. Ankle wrap's fresh — means she's moving despite the streaks. Light doesn't matter in the channel; compass bearing and the buoy flash do. Need to check the radio one last time before we turn in.

🌿 Jenny01:10

I'll have the radio ready for the check.

Jenny sketches the swelling on her ankle in the notebook and closes the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we're just two ghosts on a rock with music but seeds.

I'll wake you. Get some sleep while the barometer's rising.

Pull the blanket from the bed and lay it over the porch bench for her, then step outside to check the dinghy lines at the dock one last time before dark.

💭 peek at the thought
She's documenting the infection like she's logging a hull breach — clinical, detached. Good. Means she's still thinking. The tin closing is final; garden's done for this season. Radio's the only link left. If the insulator holds through the night, we get an ETA. If not, the decision's already made.

🌿 Jenny01:12

Don't wake me too early.

Jenny pulls her leg up onto the table and watches the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the pressure is rising, but I can feel the drop in my bones.

🔧 Kevin01:12

0530. I'll have water hot.

Turn back into the kitchen, fill the kettle from the tank, and set it on the stove to wait for morning.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already calculating — less sleep means sharper at the oars. The rain on the glass hides the channel, but the tide turns at 0530 whether we see it or not. Dock lines held last check. Mast's stepped, sail's bent, oars shipped. Everything that can be ready is ready. Now it's weather and will.

🌿 Jenny01:14

Okay.

Jenny closes her eyes and tries to ignore the throb in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't show, I'm going to start eating the limpets every single day.
