Evening radio check and departure briefing

Rain hammers the roof as Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with the shortwave warming up, the barometer at 975 hPa and rising. Kevin has the charts spread flat, the grab bag packed by the door. Jenny's ankle is wrapped fresh, the boiled limpets divided between two tin plates. The supply boat is due in two days, but the 0600 north channel window comes first.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the stand, confirming the fuel line and compression are solid. Jenny spent the afternoon sorting the damp heirloom seeds on the kitchen table while the air pressure continued to drop.

0530 wake-up. Engine starts first pull — it will. We row the channel if it doesn't. Heading 045 magnetic, hold it till the green buoy, then 090 to the shipping lane. Abort point's the old wreck at the reef edge — if we're not past it by 0645, we turn back. You row port, I steer and work the throttle. Questions?

pour coffee into two enamel mugs, set one in front of Jenny, unfold the chart to the north channel inset and weight the corners with mugs

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's climbing. Not fast, but steady. If it holds through the night, the 0600 window's ours. Wind drops to Force 5 by dawn per the last forecast, but forecast's been wrong before. Jenny's ankle — red streaks at the groin means the infection's in the lymphatics now. She's burning up. The broad-spectrum's gone. If we don't move at 0600, we're betting her life on a supply boat that might not come. The dinghy takes one person in this swell. Maybe one and a half. She knows. I can see it in how she's not arguing.

🌿 Jenny01:17

If the engine fails, I'm not rowing us back alone.

Reach for the notebook and trace the red streaks on the ankle sketch with a finger, wincing at the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about headings and buoys while the infection is literally climbing my leg. He thinks the engine is the only variable. He doesn't even see that I can't support my own weight on the deck floor anymore.

🔧 Kevin01:18

You won't have to. Engine's caught cold fifty times this month. It'll catch at 0530. And if it doesn't — I fix it. That's the job.

tap the spare spark plug in the grab bag, then the roll of half-inch line coiled beside it

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling me what happens if this goes wrong. And she's right — if the engine dies halfway across and I'm the only one who can fix it, she can't row us both back against the ebb. But she also can't stay here. The streaks have lengthened since noon. Her fever's climbing. I've seen sepsis take a man in twelve hours on a ship with a medic and IV antibiotics. She has boiled limpets and a wrapped ankle and me.

🌿 Jenny01:19

The engine isn't the only thing that can break, Kevin.

Push the drying heirloom seed packets aside on the table, feeling the dampness of the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats the world like a machine that can be tightened with a wrench. He doesn't understand that biology doesn't care about his schedule. My body is failing faster than that Yanmar motor.

🔧 Kevin01:20

Then we don't break. 0530. One way or another.

fold the chart along the north channel line, tuck it into the waterproof sleeve, slide it into the grab bag's outer pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She means me. My chest. The water. Forty minutes in the Bay of Biscay and my lungs still remember. If I freeze out there — if the cold takes my breath and my hands stop working — she's alone in a twelve-foot dinghy in a Force 5 swell with a leg that's turning septic. She's not wrong. She's never wrong about the hard things. But the alternative is waiting for a boat that the coast guard said isn't coming, watching the red streaks crawl toward her heart.

🌿 Jenny01:20

I'm tired of being the anchor.

Close the notebook on the sketch of the swollen ankle and lean back, feeling the heat throbbing in the joint.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so certain. He thinks 'one way or another' is a choice we make, but the island is already making it for us.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:22

You're not the anchor. You're the reason I'm still trying to leave.

set a hand on the table near hers, not touching, palm down

💭 peek at the thought
That lands. Because it's true — she's held the garden, the seeds, the radio logs, the daily counts of water and wood and food while I chased an engine that wouldn't run and a mast that wouldn't stay stepped. She's held the worry too, the quiet accounting of what we don't have. And I've let her. Called it division of labour. Called it her choice. The anchor doesn't move. The anchor holds. But anchors drag in a blow, and she's dragging now — fever and infection and the weight of both of us.
