The Gathering Storm

The tide is beginning to turn, and the wind is picking up from the south, signaling the end of the dry window.

The rain has shifted from a steady drizzle to a driving downpour, hammering the cottage roof. The wind has picked up from the west, causing the dinghy to strain against its mooring lines, and the tide is rising rapidly, pushing the swell high against the dock pilings.

🔧 Kevin19:00

Kevin — walk down to the dock to check all lashings and mooring lines before the swell builds

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Wind shifting south. That's the window closing. Need to check the dock lashings one more time before the swell builds, and clear that drainage channel by the foundation before the rain fills it.

🌿 Jenny19:01

Kevin, check the south ring again. The wind is already shifting the boat.

stand up slowly, wince as the ankle throbs, and limp to the window to check the barometer one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that storm hits harder than predicted, the moorings won't hold the tension.

🔧 Kevin19:02

On it.

walk to the south end of the dock and inspect the mooring ring mortise and oak wedges, testing for movement under the dinghy's pull

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. South ring took the strain last storm. If it's moving now, the mortise is working loose again. I'll check it first.

🌿 Jenny19:02

Make sure the wedges are seated deep.

turn away from the window and pick up the seed tin, checking the edges for any new signs of white serious.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way pulls, the dinghy is gone and I'm stuck here with this infection.

🔧 Kevin19:04

Kevin — crouch at the south piling, drive the mallet against each wedge to test seating, and check the mortise walls for fresh crushing or splitting

💭 peek at the thought
Wedges were driven vertical-grain at low tide. Should hold. But the mortise was splintered when we recovered the ring. If the oak's crushing, I need to know now.

🌿 Jenny19:04

Let me know if you need the extra shims.

sit back down at the table, setting the tin down carefully, and watch the rain intensify against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood looks solid, but the salt air eats through everything on this island.

🔧 Kevin19:06

Wedges are tight. Mortise sound. But the shackle pin housing on the ring is worn thin. Needs the spare shackle — which we lost overboard.

walk back up the dock toward the cottage, scanning the dinghy's stern line and spring lines for chafe

💭 peek at the thought
Wedges are seated. No fresh crush on the mortise walls — oak's holding. But the ring itself has play in the shackle eye. Shackle pin housing is compromised from before. That's the weak link.

🌿 Jenny19:06

We'll have to own it to the piling itself if the ring fails.

wince as she shifts her weight, rubbing the warm skin of her ankle while looking at the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring shears, the dinghy goes into the surf and I lose my only out.
