The Approaching Gale

The tide is at its lowest point, leaving the tide pools exposed and teeming with life as the wind picks up from the south.

Kevin secured the dock mooring ring with oak wedges and verified the north piling shim was solid at low tide, then doubled the dinghy warps and deployed the storm anchor. Jenny prepared and applied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice to her infected ankle while monitoring the falling barometer.

🔧 Kevin19:40

Kevin — walk down to the dock with crowbar and mallet, check north piling shim seating and mooring ring wedges at low water.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's out further than the charts said. South wind pushing water off the shelf early. Good window to check the north piling shim and mooring ring while the structure's unloaded. Need to move before it turns.

🌿 Jenny19:40

Watch the swell, Kevin! The tide is coming back faster than the glass says!

stand slowly, clutching the doorframe, and limp toward the kitchen to fetch the sea beet for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is lying to me; the air is too heavy for a steady reading. If that storm hits before the boat, the dinghy is the first thing to go.

🔧 Kevin19:42

Watch your ankle. I'm tying off the dinghy bow line first, then the ring.

Secure dinghy bow line to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, then move to the mooring ring to drive the oak wedges home with the mallet while the tide's still slack.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — south wind piles water in quick. Glass reads steady but the swell's already licking the lower stringers. Shim check can wait ten minutes. Mooring ring's the priority; if the wedges work loose under load we lose the dinghy tie-off.

🌿 Jenny19:42

way make sure the ring is solid; the pressure is dropping in my bones.

sit on the kitchen stool, wincing as I area the sea beet and mint into a paste with the mortar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always focused on the hardware while the sky is bruising. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed in a vice of salt and hot iron.

🔧 Kevin19:44

Wedges are holding. Driving them deeper now.

Drive each of the six oak wedges tighter into the mooring ring mortise with the mallet, checking for movement in the ring shank after each one.

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it before the glass moves. Barometer was 998 steady an hour ago — if she's sensing a drop, the front's accelerating. Ring held last storm with the wedges and doubler plate, but the mortise splintered. Oak's compressing. Need to check each wedge while I can still see the mortise face.

🌿 Jenny19:44

Just get it tight. The tide is already turning and the glass is lying.

apply the cool mint poultice to the angry, red skin, wrapping it in the clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring doesn't hold, the whole boat goes to the north. The air is so thick I can taste the salt.

🔧 Kevin19:46

Ring's solid. Checking the north piling shim while the water's down.

Crouch at the north piling base, scrape kelp off the greenheart shim face, and drive the crowbar tip into the joint to test for play or rotation under the sister plank load.

💭 peek at the thought
Wedges are seated hard. Ring shank doesn't move when I lever the crowbar against it. Mortise splinters are compressed but holding. Tide's turning — can hear the suck on the beach shingle. One more check on the north piling shim while the water's low enough to see the joint.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:47

Check if it's shifting. The barometer is dropping faster than it should.

lean back against the whitewashed stone, watching the grey water swallow the tide pools.

💭 peek at the thought
The shim looks tight, but the wood is rotting from the inside. My ankle is pulsing in time with the rising tide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:48

Shim's fast. No play. Barometer's falling — four down. Doubling the dinghy warps and setting the storm anchor now.

Run a second stern spring from the dinghy transom to the mooring ring with the heavy weather line, then deploy the storm anchor kit off the bow with fifty metres of warp.

💭 peek at the thought
Shim's tight. No rotation, no gap at the kerf. Greenheart's holding the north piling toe solid. Sister plank bolts haven't backed out. But the barometer — she's right. Dropped four millibars since I looked last. Southwest swell building fast. Dock's as ready as it gets. Need to get the dinghy warps doubled and the storm anchor set before the chop hits the mooring.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:48

Watch the anchor line. The tide is coming in too fast for the glass.

sit on the porch, rubbing the throbbing ankle and watching the clouds darken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the anchor drags, the wayhy is lost to the rocks. My leg is a fire under the skin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:50

Anchor's holding. Bow's head to swell. Getting the shutters battened and the generator straps tight.

Batten the cottage shutters with timber strips and nails, then check the generator ratchet straps on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Warp's paying out clean. Anchor bit in the sand — felt the drag settle. Bow rides head-to-swell now. Stern spring's taking the load off the ring. Tide's pushing up the beach fast; water's already lapping the lower dock planks. Cottage shutters need battening. Generator lashings checked last storm but worth a second look. She's watching the ridge — cloud base dropping, wind veering southwest. Front's here.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:50

Check the way again. The wind is picking up from the south.

change the mint poultice on the ankle, wincing as the cold hits the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the shutters fail, the salt will ruin everything. My ankle is throbbing with every wave.
