← Day 557

the keeper's cottage · day 557 · night

The storm deepens

The wind intensifies, rattling the cottage shutters. The first bucket is nearly full, and the leak in the shutter has begun to drip into a steady stream.

The rain intensifies into a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof as the water tank finally reaches its overflow point. Inside, the smell of damp earth and salt wood hangs heavy, punctuated by the consistent drip from the leaking shutter into the galvanized bucket. The tide is rising rapidly against the dock pilings, the surf beginning to swallow the lower stones.

Bucket's near full. Swapping it out.

grab the second galvanized bucket from the porch corner and set it under the shutter leak, pull the first one clear and carry it to the porch to empty over the rail

💭 peek at the thought
Need to swap that bucket before it overflows. Storm's not letting up — barometer still falling, wind steady southwest. Shutter leak's getting worse; tape repair on the aerial insulator won't hold much longer in this driving rain. Radio's the only line out.

Watch the splash. The shutter screw is loose.

Reach up to tighten the bolt on the window frame, fingers cold and slick against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The flow is faster than I calculated yesterday. If it overflows, the floorboards will warp, and I've already spent enough time fighting the rot in this place. Kevin's moving too fast for my throbbing ankle.

🔧 Kevin21:52

Got it. Hold it steady.

pull the 19mm wrench from my belt, lean in close to the frame and tighten the shutter bolt while Jenny braces the wood, wipe rain from my eyes with a forearm

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the whole frame's working loose. Wind's driving rain straight through the gap. That screw's been backing out for weeks; I've meant to bed it with epoxy but the tub's near empty. If the shutter blows in, we lose the window and the wall gets soaked.

There. That should hold until morning. There. That should hold until morning.

Reach for the bandage from the counter and wrap it tighter around my ankle, wincing as the brace shifts. </think>THOUGHT: The drip has slowed to a trickle, but the wood's swelling from the rain - I can feel the screw binding as I turn it.

The drip has slowed to a trickle, but the wood's swelling from the rain - I can feel the screw binding as I turn it. Good. For now.

Thanks.

let her work, flex my toes inside the brace to test the fit, glance at the barometer on the shelf — 984 and still falling

💭 peek at the thought
She's wrapping my ankle, not hers. When did that happen? The infection's supposed to be clearing — antibiotics finished, fever down. But she's favoring her own leg as she moves, and now she's tending to me. The storm's loud enough to cover the questions I won't ask.

🌿 Jenny21:55

Keep an eye on the tank.

Limp to the wood stove to check the pot of sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure keeps dropping like that, the boat is going to have a rough crossing. I need to check the sea beet poultice.
