Midday radio check and Yanmar decision
Kevin is at the cottage with the shortwave; Jenny is on the north cliffs finishing her sketches.
The humidity is heavy as the flat sky darkens, and the scent of coming rain lingers. The tide is steadily rising against the dock pilings, submerging the lower rocks. Inside the cottage, the smell of damp wood and drying sea beet hangs in the air while the rhythmic drip from the leaky shutter echoes in the silence.
You sit at the radio table, the aerial tape holding for now. You key the mic on Tom's frequency, static hissing. The barometer reads 982 and rising. You wait for a voice, any voice, while the Yanmar sits on the dinghy untested at load.
Sorrel Island calling. Kevin. Frequency clear if you're listening, Tom.

Kevin — stand, stretch shoulders, walk to porch door and look out at dinghy bobbing at dock

You close the notebook, the last salt gland rendered. Your ankle pulses with each heartbeat. The path down is loose shale and salt-blasted grass. You start the descent, one careful step at a time, the cottage roof visible through the grey.
Jenny — walk back toward the cottage, shifting weight to the good leg to minimize the throb.
