The Approaching Storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind picks up, rattling the garden shade cloths.

Kevin works at the back of the cottage, clearing the tank overflow channel with a spade and crowbar to prevent the ground from saturating in the heavy humidity. Inside, Jenny limps toward the kitchen, wincing as the weight shifts on her throbbing ankle, seeking supplies for a dressing.

🔧 Kevin02:20

Kevin — grab the spade and crowbar from the porch, head to the back wall to clear the tank overflow channel before the ground saturates.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Need to get the overflow cleared before the tank backs up into the cottage, and the shade cloth will shred if I don't batten it down proper.

🌿 Jenny02:21

Watch your step, the grass is already turning to a bog!

Limp back inside, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and head for the kitchen to find the gauze and antiseptic.

💭 peek at the thought
If that channel blocks, the whole foundation will shift and I can't have the cottage tilting into the mud.

🔧 Kevin02:22

Take it slow. I'll have the overflow clear in ten minutes.

Work the spade into the drainage trench behind the tank, clearing the silt and root mat blocking the outflow pipe.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too much on that ankle. Should've kept her off it another day. Ground's going to turn to soup fast with this rain.

🌿 Jenny02:23

Just make sure the pipe is completely clear, the tank is nearly at capacity.

Sit on the kitchen chair, prop my leg up on a stool, and begin peeling back the sticky tape to check for heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's ten minutes, but the water pressure is already straining the stone joints.

🔧 Kevin02:24

Pipe's running free at the tank end. Checking the fall now.

Follow the trench line with the spade, exposing the pipe run to the soak pit, clearing each junction.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 391 litres — nine shy of the brim. If that overflow chokes, the back wall takes the pressure. Pipe's clear at the surface, need to check the fall all the way to the soak pit.

🌿 Jenny02:26

Check the soak pit too—I don't want it backing up under the porch floor.

Lay down the old dressing on a clean piece of paper and inspect the red, angry-swelling skin around the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fall is wrong, the water will just pool there and rot the base of the wall.

🔧 Kevin02:27

On it.

Pry the inspection hatch cover at the soak pit with the crowbar, shine the headlamp down, and clear the inlet with the spade handle.

💭 peek at the thought
Soak pit's the bottleneck. If the shingle's blinded with silt, the whole system backs up under the porch. Need to get the crowbar down the inspection hatch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:29

Be careful with the cover, the wood is soft from the rot.

Soak a gauze pad in the antiseptic and prepare to wipe the discharge from the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pit is choked, the whole island is turning into a swamp by morning.

🔧 Kevin02:29

Kevin — ease the crowbar under the hatch lip, lever slow. Shine the headlamp beam down the shaft — check shingle depth, inlet clearance. Ram the spade handle down the inlet to break any silt plug.

💭 peek at the thought
Cover's been soft for months. Patch it after the storm if it holds. Right now the pit's the priority.

🌿 Jenny02:30

Tell me when it's clear, I need to see how deep this goes.

Press the wet gauze to the ankle, wincing as the cold hits the inflamed skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If it doesn't drain, I'm going to be sleeping in the kitchen.
