The storm breaks

Kevin and Jenny are huddled inside the cottage as the rain turns into a torrential downpour. The wind whistles through the reinforced radio mast bracing.

The air in the cottage is thick with the scent of damp wood and drying herbs. The barometer continues its slow descent to 981 hPa, indicating the approaching storm is nearing. Jenny rests on the bed, her ankle throbbing beneath the mint poultice while Kevin checks the seals on the cottage windows.

Check the wording again. The pressure is dropping too fast.

Reach for the notebook and a pencil, wincing as I shift my weight to keep the pressure off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind picks up more, the boat won't make it through the channel, even if they are on schedule.

Copy that.

walk to the radio shelf and read the barometer, then jot the reading and time in the notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer was 981 at 0300, now it's moving. Fast drop means the front's accelerating. I should've checked it again an hour ago.

Make sure the shutters are latched tight.

Sit up slightly against the pillows, watching the rain lash against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
982 hPa and falling. It's not just a storm, it's a wall.

Done yesterday. Windward shutter tarped and battened. Leeward's latched.

glance at the porch door to confirm the leeward shutter's still tight, then return to the table

💭 peek at the thought
Shutters are already battened — did the windward one yesterday with the spare tarp and timber strips. But she needs to hear me say it.

🌿 Jenny02:46

I need to check the grandmother's seeds once this passes.

Rub the edge of my ankle, feeling the dull throb beneath the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is going to kill the mold in that tin if I don't move them.

🔧 Kevin02:46

Tin's in your pocket. You want me to bring the dry box from the shelf so we can swap them over when the rain eases?

reach for the tin mug of cold tea on the table and drink it down

💭 peek at the thought
She's been carrying that tin in her pocket for weeks. The viable seed we planted is in row three, but the rest of the tin's still with her. Damp's the enemy.
