Evening before the storm

The air is still and stifling, and the tide is high, lapping the dock.

Kevin prepares a fresh sea beet and honey poultice for Jenny's ankle while the warm rain patters against the cottage. They discuss the dropping barometer pressure, signaling an approaching storm before the supply boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin02:30

Kevin — walk to the back of the cottage, spade in hand, and resume digging the drainage trench around the water tank foundation

💭 peek at the thought
Should finish the overflow trench before the rain hits proper. Water's already seeping around the foundation stones. Jenny's on the porch with the radio — she'll hear the supply boat call if it comes through early.

🌿 Jenny02:32

Be careful with the tank base, Kevin.

Sit on the kitchen chair, peel back the old gauze from my ankle, and hiss as the adhesive sticks to the inflamed skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that trench doesn't hold, the whole foundation will shift and I'll lose the water supply.

🔧 Kevin02:32

Spade only near the stones. Crowbar's for the clay further out.

set the crowbar aside and use the spade to carefully clear the clay from around the tank's foundation stones, working slow and shallow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the tank's sitting on dry-stacked stone, not a proper footing. One wrong shove with the crowbar and the whole thing lists. I'll work the spade, not the bar, near the base.

🌿 Jenny02:34

Good. We need that runoff clear before the next rain really hits.

Dip a clean cloth into the saline solution and gently wipe the yellowing around the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
He's listening, at least, though the heat is making my brain feel like mush.

🔧 Kevin02:34

West side's taking water now. Be done before dark.

continue digging the drainage trench along the west side of the tank foundation, casting clay up the slope

💭 peek at the thought
Trench is deepening. Water's already finding the new grade, seeping away from the foundation. Another foot along the west side and it'll carry the overflow clean to the slope. Her ankle looks cleaner than yesterday — less heat in the skin.

🌿 Jenny02:38

The barometer is dropping. Don't push yourself too hard, just get the main channel clear.

Carefully apply a fresh layer of antibiotic cream to the infection site and wrap it with clean gauze, pulling it tight but not restrictive.

💭 peek at the thought
He's optimistic. The barometer is falling; 'before dark' won't be enough if the storm surges.

🔧 Kevin02:38

Main channel's near done. Rain'll finish the scouring.

drive the spade in for the final metre of trench, cutting the last lip of clay to let water find the fall line toward the slope

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 982 and falling. She feels it too. Trench only needs another metre to hit the natural fall line — then gravity does the rest. Rain'll come proper tonight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:41

Just make sure the fall line is deep enough.

Reach for the seed tin on the table, thumbing the metal edge, checking for the scent of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain comes as hard as the barometer suggests, that trench will just fill with silt.
