Midday meal and crate recovery

Rain hammers the roof. Kevin and Jenny eat limpet broth and corned beef at the kitchen table, the barometer at 976 hPa. The tide is turning — two hours to full flood, then the ebb will expose the rocks where the second crate sits. Kevin has the crowbar and come-along ready by the door. Jenny's ankle is wrapped and elevated on a stool, the red line marked in pen.

The air pressure drops steadily as the overcast sky thickens, signaling the arrival of the wet season storm. The tide is pushing in, submerging the lower rocks where the waterlogged crate sits. Kevin and Jenny prepare to secure the cottage and the vital gear before the wind picks up. Jenny drinks the tea, the heat warming her chest as she prepares to move on her throbbing ankle. They head toward the dock to retrieve the salt-crusted crate before the tide becomes too high.

The tide's turning, Kevin. If we don't go now, we wait another cycle.

Finish the broth, stand up with a wince, and hobble toward the door.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops further, the storm is going to be hell, and I need that crate before the surge swallows it again.

Wait." (I pull the tin mug from the shelf, fill it from the kettle.) "Drink this first. Warmth in the belly before the wind takes it.

hand her the mug, then pull on oilskin jacket and boots, check crowbar and come-along are by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The ebb's our window. Ankle's bad but she's moving anyway — that's Jenny. Grab the gear before she's out the door.

I'm ready. The ankle is holding enough for the walk.

Take the mug, take a quick sip of the tea, and adjust the brace one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so meticulous with the timing; the tide doesn't wait for warm tea.

Good. Stick close. If the surge picks up on the point, we back off — crate isn't worth either of us.

grab the crowbar and come-along, open the door into the rain, head for the dock path

💭 peek at the thought
She'll push through. She always does. The brace is solid — I wrapped it myself. Two hours to full flood, then the ebb gives us maybe ninety minutes on the rocks before the water comes back. Need to move.

🌿 Jenny04:25

Lead the way, Kevin. The crate's sitting right where I marked it on the map. Lead the way, Kevin. The crate's sitting right where I marked it on the map.

Take another step, then another, favoring my good leg as we make for the dock. </think>THOUGHT: The brace is holding, but I can feel the infection flaring with each step. Take another step, then another, favoring my good leg as we make for

Slow. Rocks are greased. Use the crowbar for a staff if you need.

walk the dock path at her pace, crowbar in one hand, come-along slung over shoulder, scanning the rocks ahead for the crate's shape

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring it hard. The red line was two fingers below the knee this morning — lymphatic spread, sepsis risk. Every step jars it. But she's moving, and the tide waits for no one. Path's slick with rain and kelp. Dock's fifty metres. Crate's another twenty past that on the rocks.

🌿 Jenny04:26

I've got it. Just watch for the kelp.

Lean weight on the crowbar, stepping carefully over the slick stones with my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is pulling out fast, I need to see that wood before the swell returns.

🔧 Kevin04:26

Ebb starts in twenty minutes. We'll set the come-along on the ring, run the line when the water drops. Rest the ankle until then.

reach the dock end, lean the crowbar against the piling, unclip the come-along and hook its fixed end to the mooring ring, coil the running line ready

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. That's what keeps her alive. The crowbar's good — gives her a third point, takes weight off the ankle. Tide's still pushing in, white water slamming the point. Crate's a dark hump wedged in the gullies past the dock end, half-submerged. Labels salt-blurred. Bottom rotted through last time we looked. Heavy. Wet wood and whatever's inside. Come-along's rated for two tonne. Anchor point's the mooring ring — oak wedges holding. Need to wait for the ebb to get purchase on it.
