Evening Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the rain lightens to a drizzle. The smell of heating corned beef fills the room.

Kevin and Jenny ate a quiet supper of corned beef and sea beet by the stove while the barometer held steady at 982 hPa. Kevin refused to let Jenny row the dinghy on the midnight tide with her infected ankle, insisting she radio the supply boat for an ETA instead. Neither keyed the microphone before the meal ended.

Smells better than it has any right to.

Walk to the stove, lift the skillet handle to check the meat, set it back. Wipe hands on thighs. Pour two mugs of water from the tank, set one on the table near her chair.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell hits me before I'm fully through the door — corned beef fat rendering, sharp and salty. My stomach tightens, not just hunger. She's cooking. Means she's moving. Means the ankle's not keeping her horizontal. Good.

It's just the salt. We need to eat before the light fails completely.

Sit down at the table, rubbing my temple, watching the steam rise from the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hungry too. I'm so tired my hands won't stop.

Light lasts another hour. Maybe ninety minutes.

Slide into the chair opposite. Scoop corned beef onto a chipped enamel plate, push it across the table. Fork up a bite, chew slow. Watch her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pale under the tan. The temple rub — headache or the infection talking. Either way, she's vertical and eating. That's the metric today.

🌿 Jenny06:03

I'll take the dinghy out at the next tide.

Take the plate, eating a small bite while feeling the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get to the north rocks tomorrow, I'll lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin06:03

Next tide's three hours past midnight. Wind'll be twenty-five, thirty in the gusts. You're not rowing out with that ankle.

Fork another bite. Chew. Swallow. Reach across the table, two fingers on her wrist — pulse check, disguised as contact. Count. Let go.

💭 peek at the thought
The words land wrong. Next tide is 0300. Black water, rising wind, barometer still falling. She knows the boat. Knows the sea. But the ankle — sepsis tracking, she said — and she's talking solo passages in the dark.

🌿 Jenny06:05

I'm stronger than the infection, Kevin.

Pick up a piece of sea beet with the fork, staring at the radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile because the skin is red and breaking.

🔧 Kevin06:05

Infection doesn't negotiate. Dinghy stays.

Stand. Take the skillet handle, scrape the last of the fat into the pan. Toss in the remaining sea beet, watch it wilt in the salt grease. Plate it. Set it in front of her without a word. Sit back down. Eat mine standing at the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
Stronger than sepsis. That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works. The red streaks I saw this morning — lymphangitic spread, femoral chain next, then bloodstream. She's burning up. She's stubborn. She's going to die on me if she pushes.

🌿 Jenny06:07

I need to see the lichen before the weather turns for real.

Take a bite of the sea beet, the salt sharp on my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
He's like a wall when he gets this stubborn.

🔧 Kevin06:07

North cliffs are slick in dry weather. With this rain — Radio first. You call the supply boat. Get an ETA. If they're running, we hold. If they're not —

Stop. Jaw tight. Exhale through the nose. Grab the water mug, drink half in one pull. Set it down hard. Turn toward the radio shelf. Fingers hover over the mic. Don't key it. Wait.

💭 peek at the thought
Lichen. The north cliffs. Two hours of wet rock scrambling on a good leg. She's not asking. She's telling. The radio, the lichen, the tide — she's building a case for leaving the cottage. For doing. The alternative is sitting here watching the barometer drop and the red lines climb her thigh.

🌿 Jenny06:09

The boat isn't due for three days, you know that.

Pick up the pencil, trace the edge of the lichen sketch on the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the island, only the risks it poses to us.
