The tide turns

Kevin returns to the cottage as the water begins to creep in. Jenny prepares to boil the water for her ankle soak.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, filling the air with the scent of damp earth and salt. The water tank has reached its capacity, the overflow pipe beginning to trickle a steady stream into the collection below. The tide is rising quickly, submerging the lower rocks and threatening the path to the southern tide pools.

🌿 Jenny17:12

The tide is coming faster than the charts predicted. Don't just stand there.

Place the pot on the wood stove and light the match.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this water to boil soon, the infection is going to take the whole leg.

Going. Backfill first, then the tarp over the seed tin.

walk to the northeast foundation with the trowel and tamp the backfill into the pointed joints, working fast against the rising water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the swell's pushing it in early. I've got maybe twenty minutes before the foundation's under water again. The pointing's holding but the backfill needs tamping.

🌿 Jenny17:13

Make sure the tarp is weighted. If the wind gets under it, the grandmother's legacy is gone.

Stir the salt into the pot and watch the water for a boil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the stone, but the seeds are rotting right under his nose.

Stones and timber. It's not moving.

grab the heavy tarp from the porch, pull it tight over the heirloom seed tin, weight the corners with the oak stakes and the greenheart offcuts stacked by the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need to tell me twice. The tin's the only thing on this island that matters more than the foundation.

🌿 Jenny17:15

Check the seal again. The rain is already seeping through the stone joints.

Lift the brace off my ankle and prepare for the soak once the water boils.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry for now, but the fever is making the room spin.

🔧 Kevin17:17

Checked it this morning. Wax paper and silica dry. But I'll look again.

crouch at the tin, peel back the tarp corner, run a finger along the rim where the lid meets the body, feel for dampness or mold bloom

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tin like I watch the Yanmar — knows every sound it shouldn't make. The rim seal held last week but the rain's been relentless.

🌿 Jenny17:19

Don't leave the lid off too long. The humidity is climbing the walls.

Watch the pot on the stove for the first bubbles.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's even a hint of mildew, the whole batch is lost.
