The Afternoon Lull

The air grows even heavier as the tide begins to turn. Kevin and Jenny prepare to tackle the waterlogged crate before the tide rises further.

Kevin pried open the waterlogged crate on the dock, revealing sealed tins of mackerel, an intact coffee jar, new half-inch rope, and a rusted seed tin marked 'E'. Jenny reached for the seed tin but her fingers trembled and she fumbled it back into the damp cardboard.

🔧 Kevin01:29

Right. Let's get it cracked while we've got the beach.

walk to the waterlogged crate at the dock with crowbar in hand, wedge the blade under the warped lid seam and lever with body weight, work around the perimeter prying each corner until the seal breaks

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Crate won't wait. Need it open and inventoried before the water takes the dock again.

Careful with the lid. The wood is soft, it might splinter and catch.

lean against the pilings to take the weight, wince as the movement pulls at the area ankle, watch the crowbar bite into the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If those seeds are ruined by the salt, I'll truly lose the only part of her I have left.

Got it. Working the corners first.

ease the crowbar under one corner with controlled pressure, let the wood fibres separate slowly, move to the next corner when the first gives, work all four sides before trying the centre

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — swollen timber splits easy. Slow and steady.

🌿 Jenny01:31

Don't force it, you'll just snap through the rot.

wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a hand, inspect the gap forming in the wood, wait for the first sound of the crate yielding.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical, it's like he's dissecting a specimen.

🔧 Kevin01:32

She's talking.

keep the crowbar seated in the widening gap at the third corner, apply steady downward pressure until the lid pops free with a wet suck of salt and vacuum, set the bar down and lift the lid clear with both hands

💭 peek at the thought
Wood's singing now. That groan means it's letting go.

🌿 Jenny01:33

Look at that moisture damage. Everything's soaked through.

lean forward and squint into the dark interior, scan the contents for the seed tin, reach out to touch the damp cardboard of the crates.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. Now let's see what the ocean actually gave back.

🔧 Kevin01:35

Tins are sealed. Coffee jar's intact. Rope's new. Seed packets...

reach into the crate and pull out the tin of mackerel, tap the lid — solid — set it aside, next the jar of coffee, wipe salt crust off the glass with sleeve, then the bundle of new half-inch rope, coil it dry on the dock planks, then the se

💭 peek at the thought
Salt crust on everything. Cardboard's pulp. But the tins sound solid when I tap them.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Check the tin first. way's tin.

reach into the wet cardboard, my fingers trembling as I feel for the cold metal of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the packets are mush, I'm done here.
