← Day 595

the keeper's cottage · day 595 · afternoon

Storm lashes the cottage

Heavy rain hammers the roof and shutters. Wind gusts shake the cottage frame. The generator runs steady under its tarp. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table — Kevin checking the shortwave for Tom's frequency, Jenny with her sketchbook closed, both listening to the storm intensify.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny18:15

The wind is shifting to the north. We need to check the bolts on the porch again.

Jenny reaches for the tin of seeds, her thumb tracing the rust in the metal, without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; the tank is nearly full, but my leg feels like a hot weight against the floor.

🔧 Kevin18:15

Bolts are good. Greenheart doesn't move. Coffee's cold though.

push the tin mug across the table toward her

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. North means the porch takes it square. But the bolts held at 30 Nm on greenheart — they'll hold at 40. She's tracing that tin like it's a rosary. Let her.

🌿 Jenny18:17

It's fine.

Jenny takes a small, slow sip of the cold coffee, wincing at the bitterness while watching the rain lash against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about the coffee, but the island is just trying to shake us.

🔧 Kevin18:17

Ankle?

reach for the kettle on the stove, pour fresh water into it, set it back on the hot plate

💭 peek at the thought
She won't admit the ankle's bothering her. Won't admit the coffee's vile. Won't admit she's scared of the wind shifting north. She just watches rain and traces rust on a tin that held nothing but salt air.

🌿 Jenny18:19

It's stable.

Jenny shifts her weight under the table, a sharp intake of breath catching as the movement pulls against the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line hasn't moved past the mark, but the heat is still there.

🔧 Kevin18:19

Lie still then. Kettle'll boil in three minutes.

pull the first aid kit from the shelf, set it on the table between us, open it to the gauze and antiseptic cream

💭 peek at the thought
Stable. Right. The red line receded two millimetres past my noon mark — I measured. But she shifted wrong just now and the breath caught. She's good at hiding it. Better than me.

🌿 Jenny18:21

Jenny — jenny leans back against the chair, her eyes fixed on the rain sheeting down the window, watching the water rise in the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
Three minutes is an eternity when your pulse feels like it's trapped in your bone.그런SAY: I'm trying.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:21

Water's good. Generator's good. Porch is good.

sit back in my chair, hands flat on the table, listening to the wind find the gaps in the shutters

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full. 400 litres. She's watching it rise like it's a gauge for something else — how long we can hold out, how long before the supply boat breaks through, how long before something gives. The rain's not stopping. Wind's steady north-northwest now, gusting against the shutters. Generator's steady. Bolts held. Ankle's not stable. She knows both.

🌿 Jenny18:23

Everything but me.

Jenny looks at the tin of seeds on the table, her hand hovering over the metal lid, feeling the weight of the garden she hasn't started yet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's counting the things that aren't breaking so we don't look at what is.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:23

The garden's not yours to start. It's the island's to allow. You've been allowing it.

reach over, cover her hand on the tin with mine, thumb brushing cold metal

💭 peek at the thought
The tin. She means the garden. The sensory garden we talked about for eleven months. The heirloom tomatoes, the sea beet rows, the mint and purslane and mustard she catalogued. The beds I built and the wall I raised and the shade cloth I deployed. All of it waiting. She thinks she failed it. I think the island decides what grows.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:25

It's mostly weeds anyway.

Jenny looks down at our hands over the tin, the throb in her ankle matching the rhythm of the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's a choice, but I'm just waiting for the rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:25

Weeds don't hold stakes. Weeds don't push true leaves in salt wind.

squeeze her fingers once, slow, then let go and reach for the kettle as it starts to whistle

💭 peek at the thought
Weeds. She's wrong. The tomato stakes are driven. Basil's struggling but two plants hold. Sea beet seedlings in trays — she knows the count. Pepper and lettuce lost to damping-off, she bagged and burned them herself. The wall stands two courses higher than when we arrived. Shade cloth deployed. Lime spread. Soil amended. She's done the work. She just won't call it a garden until it feeds us.
