Afternoon rest and shroud check

Kevin returns from the dock and finds Jenny asleep on the porch with her ankle still in the basin. The letter is sealed on the dinghy. The barometer holds at 999. The tide is turning.

Kevin re-tensioned the aft shroud on the dinghy mast and wrote a reply to Tom's letter for the supply boat. Jenny monitored her ankle infection in the salt soak, noting the red streaks remained static, and sketched sea beet salt gland morphology in her notebook.

🌿 Jenny20:33

Jenny — opens my eyes slowly, lifts my ankle out of the water, and looks at the red streaks for any movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can just sleep through the heat, maybe I'll wake up feeling slightly less hollow.

🔧 Kevin20:33

(nothing — just set the wrench down quiet on the porch boards)

sit on the porch step with my back against the wall, pull out the notebook, and sketch the dinghy's mast bracket alignment while the tide turns

💭 peek at the thought
She's healing. The red streaks haven't moved past her marks. Good. Let her rest — she earned it. The shroud's set, the dinghy's ready. Now the waiting starts.

🌿 Jenny20:37

Is the tank full?

I wipe the water from my ankle with a dry cloth and return to the sea beet sketch, noting the density of the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that wrench is better than the radio static, at least.

🔧 Kevin20:37

Full. Has been since the front sat on us.

flip the notebook to a fresh page and start a quick sketch of the mast bracket — starboard side, the slight offset in the through-bolt holes, the shim I drove under the heel

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been full for days. She knows that. She's asking if I checked.

🌿 Jenny20:39

Good. We need the water if the boat is late.

I lean my head back against the stone wall and watch his pencil move across the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's drawing the bracket. He actually noticed the way the wood was splitting.

🔧 Kevin20:39

Boat's three days out if the front holds. Radio had them clear yesterday.

keep sketching — the shim thickness, the bolt pattern, the way the mast sits two degrees off true — then tear the page out and tuck it in the back of the notebook for reference

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the drawing, not me. The pencil line is cleaner than the bracket deserves.

🌿 Jenny20:43

I hope the front holds.

I lift my ankle back into the water, watching the edge of the red streaks to ensure they haven't moved.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. Long enough for the infection to stay where it is.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:43

It'll hold. Barometer's steady.

set the pencil down, stretch my legs out on the porch boards, and close my eyes against the grey light

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks haven't moved. I'd see it if they had. She's checking like I taught her — calm, methodical. The front's holding at 999. Three days.

🌿 Jenny20:45

Jenny — i let my weight sink into the chair, listening to the tide pull at the rocks below.

💭 peek at the thought
The water feels cool on the skin, but the heat stays deep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:45

Your ankle — the heat's gone from it.

open one eye, glance at her calf where the red lines stop, then let the lid fall shut again

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us isn't empty anymore. It holds things we're both learning to carry.
