Shared meal and radio lesson
Rain drums on the cottage roof. Kevin pours coffee into two tin mugs. Jenny sits up on the cot, ankle elevated, color returning to her face. The shortwave radio sits on the shelf, its shattered aerial sheltered under the tarp. Kevin unfolds the procedure card for the Mayday phonetic alphabet, ready to begin the next teaching session.
Kevin completed the NATO phonetic alphabet and number drill with Jenny, who repeated the callsign VTU correctly. Jenny attempted to reach the generator shed to check water levels but was stopped by Kevin; the tank is at 392 litres and rising with steady rain.
Alpha, Bravo, Charlie... I'm ready for the next, Kevin.
Reaches for the mug of coffee with a trembling hand and takes a slow sip.

Sit down. The shed's fine. I checked the oil and belt before the rain hit. Generator's not going anywhere.
Set my mug down, push off the doorframe, and move to intercept her — one hand taking her elbow, the other reaching for the mug she doesn't have but shouldn't be fetching herself.

Tank's 392. Checked at dawn. Rain's been steady since — probably 400 by now, overflow running. You stay off it.
Keep my hand on her elbow, guiding her back to the cot, then pull the blanket up over her legs once she's settled.
