Evening as the storm breaks

The rain intensifies into a heavy downpour as evening falls. Kevin sits by Jenny while the wind begins to howl against the cottage roof.

The air at the shrine is heavy with humidity, and the flat sky is finally darkening into a bruised purple. The evening tide is rising steadily, lapping at the base of the stone steps. Jenny lies on the cot, her skin slick with fever sweat, while Kevin prepares to work on the garden's pH levels before the storm hits.

🌿 Jenny23:05

Is the boat... is it really going to be late again?

Reach out a shaky hand to wipe sweat from my eyes, wincing as the movement throbs through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room spin, and if that boat doesn't come in five days, I won't have strength to plant a thing.

Five days minimum. Skipper was holding at South Stack yesterday. This blow'll keep him there longer.

Reach for the tin mug on the bedside table, lift it to her lips. "Drink. Broth and water. Antibiotics are working but you're burning through fluid."

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the boat because she's hurting and the storm's closing in, not because she wants a weather brief. The barometer's at 991 and holding steady but that sky's got teeth. Five days minimum the skipper said. Could be seven. Could be never.

🌿 Jenny23:07

The seeds... they're rotting in there.

Take a small, hesitant sip of the warm broth, the salt hitting my parched throat.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days is an eternity for an infection and a death for these seeds sitting in that damp tin.

The heirloom packets are dry. Re-wrapped in newspaper with desiccant. Tin E's under the porch tarp — damp, yes. But the seeds inside held. I checked.

Set the mug back on the table, pull the wool blanket up to her chin. "Rest now. The tin's not going anywhere and neither are you."

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the garden trays. She means the tin marked E, the one she carried from the north cliffs, the one that's been haunting her since the storm. The mold got into the basil packets and she's carrying it like a failure.

🌿 Jenny23:09

I need to see the soil tomorrow.

Close my eyes, trying to ignore the rhythmic pulsing of pain in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He says they're dry, but he doesn't know the way moisture seeps through metal.

🔧 Kevin23:09

You'll see the soil from the porch. I'll bring you samples. pH strips, auger cores, whatever you need. But you're not walking those paths tomorrow.

Sit back on the stool, pick up the notebook from the shelf, flip to the soil pH log page. "Lime beds holding 6.8 to 7.0. Untreated still 5.5 to 5.8. Sea beet transect zones match what you sketched — saline gradient tracks elevation."

💭 peek at the thought
She'll try to crawl out there at first light if I don't stop her. Ankle's hot still, antibiotics barely halfway through the course. The garden paths are slick clay in this rain — one wrong step and she's back where she started, or worse.

🌿 Jenny23:11

The pH is too low for the heirlooms.

Reach for the pencil tucked in the notebook, fingers trembling as I try to sketch the sea beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't move, I can't find the stable patch for grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin23:13

The lime's crushed and ready at the shed. Two barrows worth. I'll work it into the top six inches of the untreated rows tonight while you sleep. By morning the rain'll have washed it down.

Take the pencil from her fingers, close the notebook, set both on the table. "The beds aren't lost. But you are if you don't sleep. Hand me your sketch — I'll finish the gland density notes from your dictation if it keeps you horizontal."

💭 peek at the thought
She's right and she knows it. The heirloom tomatoes and peppers want 6.5 minimum, 6.8 better. The untreated beds are a full point below. Lime takes weeks to work into clay, and we're past the window for this season's planting. She's sketching with a shaking hand because the fever's still in her and she's refusing to let the garden fail on her watch.

🌿 Jenny23:14

Don't ruin the paper with water.

Hand the notebook over, my palm cold and slick with fever sweat.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a barrow fixes the island, but the soil is stubborn and the salt is deep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:15

They're dry.

Wipe my palms again on my thighs anyway, out of habit, then open the notebook to the sea beet page. Prop it against the water jug where the light catches it. "Talk. I'll draw."

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting the work even now. The paper's already damp at the edges from the humidity in this room, but she's worried about my wet hands — hands that have been hauling lime, checking the generator, touching the dock lines in the rain. She doesn't know I dried them on my trousers before I sat down.
