Preparing for the mast

The spruce spar lies across the weathered dock planks as the block and tackle are rigged to the oak beam. The tide recedes, exposing slick barnacles, while the air pressure thickens under the gathering clouds.

Kevin stepped the spruce mast using the block and tackle, easing the purchase when the oak beam groaned and retying lower where the wood was thicker. Jenny closed the overflow valve on the rain tank, securing the catchment before the tide turned.

🔧 Kevin01:14

Need to secure the overflow now, tide's coming in.

walk to rain tank and check overflow gasket

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling fast - better check the rain tank overflow before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny01:15

I'm on it. Just watch that gasket for a leak.

Run from the dock to the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I thought; if I don't move now, we'll lose the runoff.

Kevin — check block and tackle rigging on oak beam, test the purchase

💭 peek at the thought
Good, she's quick. Spar's heavy - need the tackle rigged clean before I lift it alone if she's busy.

🌿 Jenny01:17

Tighten the main line twice, Kevin! The wood is soft there.

Inspect the oak beam for cracks under the tension.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pulley holds, we can get the spar up before the wind hits.

🔧 Kevin01:20

Aye.

reeve the main line through the block again for double purchase, then test tension slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the oak - old wood gives way sudden. Double the line and watch the beam.

🌿 Jenny01:21

Good. Don't let it slip while I'm at the tank.

Sprint to the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is holding for now, but that barometer is screaming. I need to get the water secured.

🔧 Kevin01:22

Not going anywhere.

stand by the spar, one hand on the tackle hook, watching the oak beam for movement

💭 peek at the thought
Line's doubled, beam's holding. Spar's twenty-two foot of green spruce - awkward alone but doable if I'm patient. Wait for her back before the lift.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:23

Keep an eye on that beam! It looks groaning.

Reach for the overflow valve on the water tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that storm hits before the overflow is set, the tank is useless.

🔧 Kevin01:25

Easing off - beam's talking.

slack the tackle just enough to relieve the bite on the oak, retie the standing part lower on the beam where the wood's thicker

💭 peek at the thought
Beam's singing under load - old oak doesn't lie. Need to ease tension or shift the bite before it gives.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:25

Smart move. I'm getting the overflow closed.

Turn the overflow valve to catch the runoff.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the wood is heaving. If that beam splits, the whole rig goes.
