The Approaching Front

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the wind picks up. The first scent of rain hangs in the still air.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine under load in the dinghy to ensure the vibration fix held under pressure. Jenny debrided her infected ankle with the saline solution while documenting sea-beet morphology in the notebook.

🔧 Kevin01:42

Yanmar holds at half throttle. Vibration's still above that — shaft or bracket. You ate?

Walk into the kitchen, set the notebook on the table, and pour water from the kettle into a tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's clean. No vibration at half throttle. Above that it's still there — prop shaft or the mast bracket alignment. She looks steadier than she has in days. Ankle's clean, fever's gone. The barometer's dropping and the air tastes like rain.

🌿 Jenny01:43

I had the limpets. I'm not hungry.

Jenny sits heavily on the chair, lifting her swollen ankle onto the table, and watches the steam rise from the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle feels like it's pulsing with hot lead, and he's worried about an engine while the sky is turning bruise.

🔧 Kevin01:44

Eat anyway. Cold front's six hours out, maybe less. You'll need it.

Pull out the other chair, sit, and push the tin of corned beef toward her with the fork.

💭 peek at the thought
She's lost weight. The ankle's still angry red above the brace. She's tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. The barometer's still falling.

🌿 Jenny01:45

The pressure is dropping too fast for the boat to show up anyway.

Jenny stares at the tin, then picks up a small piece of meat with the fork, chewing slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks food will fix the way the infection is eating through my skin.

🔧 Kevin01:46

Boat's not coming. We've got diesel, flour, tinned meat. Garden's holding. We wait it out.

Take a bite of corned beef from the tin, chew, and glance at the barometer on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 984 and dropping steady. The boat won't cross in this. She knows it. I know it. We've both known it for days.

🌿 Jenny01:47

If the storm hits the garden, the sea-beet seedlings will go under.

Jenny swallows the meat and reaches for her notebook to close the sketch of the sea-beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
We're always waiting for something while the island just takes us bit by bit.

🔧 Kevin01:48

Tarp's battened. Deadmen held last blow. Shingle trench is clear. They'll take the salt water if the surge comes over the wall.

Stand, wipe hands on trousers, and walk to the porch door to check the sky to the southwest.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking about the transect data. The elevation gradient. The salt gland density maps. Not the tomatoes. Not the basil. The wild sea beet. The work.

🌿 Jenny01:49

The soil is already too heavily for the seeds anyway.

Jenny pulls her ankle down from the table, wincing as the movement stings the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about the walls like they can stop the ocean from reclaiming the land.
