Dawn watch and Yanmar test
First light breaks thin and grey over the cottage. Kevin rises stiff from the porch chair to run the Yanmar at idle, charging batteries and listening for the raw water pump whine. Jenny wakes shivering under the blanket, the cold pack long since warmed. The barometer still reads 1008 hPa. Low tide is turning. The shutter drip continues.
The heavy air of the wet season presses on the cottage, smelling of salt and damp earth. Jenny lies on the cot, her ankle swollen and the red tracking moving upward despite the sea beet poultice. The tide is rising outside, lapping rhythmically against the reinforced pilings of the new dock.
Radio watch logged. Yanmar next. Back in ten.
