The First of the Storm

The rain intensifies, and the small leak in the cottage shutter begins to drip steadily onto the floor. The rats scuttle in the walls, emboldened by the noise of the wind.

Night deepens over the cottage. Kevin maintains radio watch while Jenny sleeps fitfully, her fever unbroken. The barometer holds steady at 1008 hPa, but the shutter leak drips steadily onto the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny23:11

Not today... not yet.

Reaches for the water bottle with shaking hands to take the last dose of antibiotics.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is spiking again, and if that red line reaches my hip, I won't last long enough to see the supply boat.

🔧 Kevin23:12

Last one?

Walk to the kitchen shelf, pull down the tin mug, fill it from the kettle on the stove, and set it beside her on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the last dose. The course is done and the red line's still tracking. She knows it too.

🌿 Jenny23:13

The last one. I think.

Swallows the bitter pill, wincing as the heat in my ankle throbs in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If this doesn't work, I'm just another skeleton for the island to claim.

🔧 Kevin23:14

Pack's empty. You want me to check the stores again?

Sit on the porch step, back against the wall, radio within reach. Watch the drip from the shutter hit the floorboards.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not sure. Neither am I. The blister pack's empty but the infection doesn't read labels.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:15

Just... keep the radio close.

Closes the notebook with a trembling hand, leaving the sketch of the redness tracking up my calf unfinished.

💭 peek at the thought
There's nothing left to check but the salt and the rot, and the infection is winning.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Radio's hot. I'm not moving.

Turn the squelch knob slightly, listening through the static for any break in the weather chatter. Keep the notebook in peripheral vision.

💭 peek at the thought
The sketch stays unfinished. She's stopped tracking it. That's either surrender or she knows something I don't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:17

Okay.

Closes eyes, trying to ignore the numb fire in my toes as the fever starts to blur the world.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, I'll be part of the garden soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:18

Rest. I'll watch the set.

Pull the blanket from the bunk and drape it over her legs, careful around the ankle. Check the cold pack on the cushion — still damp cool, not warm yet.

💭 peek at the thought
Numb toes. The tracking line's past the calf now. She's not saying it but the numbness means the pressure's hitting nerves. Or vessels. Neither's good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:19

Thanks.

Numbles into the pillow, listening to the rain on the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even feel the blanket anymore, just the weight of it.

🔧 Kevin23:20

Kevin — settle into the porch chair with the radio handset on my knee. Log the time and barometer in the notebook: 1008 hPa, steady. Watch the shutter drip. Listen for anything that isn't rain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's drifting. The fever's pulling her under. Good. Sleep's the only repair she gets right now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:21

Kevin? is the boat...

Reaches out a shaky hand to touch the edge of the bandage, flinching at the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The red lines are moving again. I can feel them pulsing under the skin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:22

Not today. Five days out if she shows. You're burning through the blanket.

Press the back of my hand to her forehead — hot, slick. Pull the blanket up to her shoulders. Reach for the kettle, pour the last of the warm water into the tin mug, set it by her hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the supply boat. Due in five days if it comes. She's asking if it's coming today. It's not. The barometer's steady, the radio's silent, and the storm's just settling in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:23

Five days is a long time.

Wraps both hands around the warm mug, seeking any heat that isn't the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so cold, but my leg is on fire.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:24

It is.

Keep the handset ready. Watch the barometer needle. Don't look at the bandage edge where the red's tracking past the last pen mark.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days. The antibiotic course is done. The red line's past the calf. Toes numb. She knows the math.
