MORNING day 623

The air is heavy and still as the first drops of the wet season fall. The supply boat is now one day away.

Kevin cleared the heavy corrosion from the ground stake connection and secured the coax cable to ensure a solid signal. Jenny removed the damp dressing from her ankle and meticulously sketched the spread of the inflammation in her notebook. The shortwave radio crackled with reports of missile strikes in Kyiv and news of peace talks.

Radio check in ten. You want the headset or the speaker?

walk to the radio shelf and power on the shortwave, letting the tubes warm up

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's holding at 1009 but the air's wrong — too still, too warm. Wet season's early. Boat's a day out if it comes at all. Need the radio solid before dark.

🌿 Jenny01:27

The speaker. I need to hear the static over the rain anyway.

Reach for the sketchbook on the bedside table, wincing as the movement shifts the weight on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
One day. If that boat doesn't show, the red streaks will reach my knee. He's staring at the dial like the frequency will stop the sepsis in my blood.

Volume's up. Squawk if it howls.

adjust the RF gain and antenna tuner, listening for the supply boat's usual frequency through the growing hiss

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing it. Ankle's not ready for weight. But she'll do what she wants — always does.

🌿 Jenny01:29

Kevin, check the ground stake. The insulator's been sparking since dawn.

Shift on the cot toward the window, tracing a finger along the water-stained wall where I've mapped the afternoon's rising barometer pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
The RF gain is barely masking the static. Like everything else here, the radio's failing when I need it most.

🔧 Kevin01:30

On it.

step out onto the porch and follow the coax down to the copper ground stake driven into the damp earth behind the cottage, mallet in hand

💭 peek at the thought
Ground stake's been loose since the last blow. Told myself I'd fix it. Didn't. She heard the arc — good ears.

🌿 Jenny01:31

Watch the connection point. It mights corroded.

Open the sketchbook to a fresh page and begin sketching the morphology of the spreading redness on my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the rain while I'm in here watching my skin turn angry. If the ground doesn't hold, the math doesn't matter.

🔧 Kevin01:37

Stake's solid. Lug's green with salt. Scraping it clean.

crouch in the wet grass and wire-brush the copper lug where the braid meets the stake, the brush stiff against corrosion

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping my leg like she maps the sea beet. Clinical. Precise. Doesn't miss much.

🌿 Jenny01:38

Make sure it's tight before the wind picks up.

Press the pencil hard against the paper, capturing the jagged edge of the inflammation moving toward my knee.

🔧 Kevin01:38

Lug's clean. Cinching it down.

tighten the clamp bolt with the 19mm wrench until the braid bites copper, then tug-test the whole run back to the mast base

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's already turning. Can feel it in the grass. She draws what she sees — my leg, the radio, the storm coming. Same thing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:39

Use the speaker. I need to hear the shortwave.

Reach for the sea beet poultice on the table, fingers trembling as I peel the old, damp dressing from the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a tight bolt fixes the world, but the heat is moving faster than his wrench. If the boat is late again, I'm just another specimen decaying on this island.
