The Heavy Air

Kevin sits on the porch steps, watching the barometer drop to 991 hPa. Jenny sits in a chair nearby, her ankle wrapped in a damp mint poultice cloth. The air is perfectly still and smells of salt and coming rain.

The morning air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and impending rain. The barometer is showing a steady drop to 991 hPa, signaling a shift in the weather. The tide is out low, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock.

🌿 Jenny20:21

The wind is going to turn soon. Check the tank again before the rain starts.

Reach down to carefully adjust the poultice on my ankle, wincing at the heat, then open the notebook to mark the height of the red line relative to the knee.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come in nine days, I'm going to be part of the soil here.

🔧 Kevin20:22

Tank's full. Overflow seal held last storm. You want me to check the garden tarps while I'm up?

walk to the rain tank at the back of the cottage, tap the side to confirm level, then check the copper spillway hose where it runs past the east foundation

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind — barometer's dropped two millibars since I last looked. Tank's full at 394 but the overflow seal held through the last blow. Her ankle's the real gauge; that red line retreating means the antibiotics are winning.

🌿 Jenny20:23

Yes, make sure the south corner is weighted down. The wind will catch it from the ridge.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching him move, and try to

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is secure. If the tarps hold, the seedlings might survive the night.

🔧 Kevin20:24

South corner's the weak point. Crab got the stake last blow. I'll drive fresh oak and batten with timber strips.

walk to the garden, inspect the shade cloth's south anchor point, pull the shredded stake remnants, drive a new oak stake deep, and secure the cloth edge with a timber strip battened down with galvanized nails

💭 peek at the thought
South corner took the worst last time — crab shredded the anchor point. Need to drive new stakes and batten it proper.

🌿 Jenny20:27

Make sure the nails are galvanized. The salt air eats through everything else.

Watch him work from the porch, my ankle throbbing in time with the hammer strikes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fast with the hammer. I hope that wood doesn't split when the gale finally hits.

🔧 Kevin20:27

Got the box by the bench. Four left after this.

pull galvanized box nails from the tin at the workbench, batten the shade cloth's south edge with the timber strip, drive four nails through the strip into the new oak stake, then walk back toward the cottage checking the other three corner

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the salt better than she lets on. Galvanized box nails in the tin by the workbench — used three last repair, four left. Good for this and one more blow.

🌿 Jenny20:31

Check the tension on the north side too. If it sags, it'll tear.

Rub a hand over the hot skin of my calf, then open the notebook to sketch the path of the red streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's counting nails now. I'm counting the hours until the fever breaks or the infection reaches my hip.

🔧 Kevin20:33

Spruce stakes on north, drove them deep last time. I'll check tension anyway.

walk to the garden's north edge, tug the shade cloth to test give, confirm stakes are firm and cloth is drum-tight, then circle back to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
North side's held — stakes are spruce, drove them deep after the last storm. But she's right to ask; sag tears cloth faster than wind.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:35

Good. If that holds, we can at least sleep without worrying about the garden.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts, and watch the grey light bleed over the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too quiet. The island is holding its breath, and so am I. ...

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:35

Garden's secured. Dock's south piling next — needs the greenheart sister before the tide turns. Three hours.

walk to the dock, assess the south piling's lean, position the greenheart offcut against it, and start driving the 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts to sister it fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the horizon like she's reading the barometer in the sky. The grey's thickening west — front's closer than the pressure says. Yanmar's vibration still needs the gearbox pull, but the dock's pilings come first. South one's listing. Greenheart sister plank and bolts are staged. Tide's low now, comes up in three hours.
