← Day 635

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

Midday at the dock and cottage

Kevin works on the Yanmar gearbox at the dock while Jenny rests at the cottage, monitoring her ankle infection.

Kevin worked at the dock in the driving rain, struggling to pull the Yanmar gearbox while trying to reinforce the piling. Jenny stayed inside the cottage, managing her ankle infection and documenting the skin changes as the storm rolled in.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You have the gearbox unshipped and the coupling exposed. Brass shim stock cut from the old prop shaft lies ready. The tide is rising, water climbing the greenheart sister planks on the south piling. You test the coupling alignment with a straight edge — it's off by two hundredths. The vibration at half-throttle will persist until this is true.

🔧 Kevin20:50

Kevin — file the brass shim to thickness, install between coupling faces, torque bolts to spec, re-check alignment with straight edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hundredths is enough to eat the output shaft in twenty hours. Brass shim, proper torque, and this coupling runs true.

🔧 Kevin20:58

Kevin — reinstall Yanmar gearbox, align driveshaft, torque coupling bolts to 35Nm. Walk to south piling, inspect greenheart sister plank bolts at rising tide line.

💭 peek at the thought
Coupling's true now. Gearbox going back on. Tide's still coming up — need to check the south piling sistering before the water gets too high to see the bolts.

🔧 Kevin21:02

Kevin — key mic on 2182 and 4125 for 1300 radio check. Report position, weather, Yanmar status. Then walk back to cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Gearbox seated, coupling spins clean. South piling sistering holds — both stainless through-bolts tight, greenheart sound. Tide's lapping the lower bolt heads. Good. Radio check at 1300 next. Then the cottage.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You lie on the porch couch, ankle elevated on a cushion, the cold pack warming beside you. The bandage is tight, the sea beet poultice beneath it drying. You can see the red lines tracking up your calf. The notebook sits open on your chest, blank. The radio crackles under the tarp — Kevin's 0800 call got no answer. You listen for the 1300 check-in.

🌿 Jenny20:57

Kevin, if you're hearing this, I need you to check the supply boat channel. Tell them I'm having complications with the ankle infection and the antibiotics are running low. I might not make it through the storm if you don't have backup medical supplies.

retrieve scalpel from medical kit, sterilize with alcohol and heat, prepare fresh sea beet-mint-honey poultice, apply to infected ankle with clean gauze, document infection progression in notebook with timestamp, check water test kit for pH

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is moving faster than the poultice can catch up. I need to lance again, this time with better tools, and keep the sea beet-mint-honey mixture on constant watch. The barometer dropping means I have maybe three hours before the storm hits and I can't risk the north ridge trek.

🌿 Jenny21:01

Stay dry, Jenny. Just stay dry.

wrap the ankle tighter with a fresh bandage, check the radio for anyES from Kevin, sketch the pattern of the infection in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain has finally started, a heavy drumming on the tin roof. My ankle is throbbing in time with the storm, and the red lines are definitely closer to the knee now.

🌿 Jenny21:05

way yet... not yet.

soak a clean cloth in cold water, reapply to forehead, take the next dose of antibiotics, stare at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is getting heavy again; the room is blurring at the edges. If I can't get the temperature down, I won't be able to walk to the radio tomorrow.
