MORNING

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust just as the wind picks up from the ridge.

Kevin secured the garden tarp against rising wind and checked the water tank, finding it nearly full at 397 litres. Jenny attempted to document her fever but her hands shook too badly to write.

🌿 Jenny20:37

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. Secure the tarp on the seeds.

Tightens the bandage around her swollen ankle and winces as the salt stings the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat is late and this fever spikes, I'll be buried here in the weeds.

On it.

Walk to the garden and secure the tarp over the seed trays with timber battens and rope.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling fast. Wind off the ridge means southwest — swell'll hit the dock before the rain gets heavy. Tarp first, then the dinghy lines, then the pilings.

🌿 Jenny20:41

Check the water tank when you go. I need to know exactly how much we have.

Leans back against the whitewashed stone of the cottage and closes her eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the skin is darkening around the edge of the wrap.

Will do.

Check the water tank level at the back of the cottage before heading to the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been holding at 397. Won't have changed unless the overflow leaked again. Check it quick while I'm out.

🌿 Jenny20:43

Don't let the wind get under the corners this time.

Reaches for the notebook to note the temperature, but her hands are too shaky to write clearly.

💭 peek at the thought
397 litres. Enough for now, if the sky doesn't quit on us.

🔧 Kevin20:43

They're staked. I'll double the lines.

Secure the garden tarp corners with extra rope and check the oak stakes are firm.

💭 peek at the thought
She's worse than she's saying. Hands shaking that bad means the fever's still there or the infection's spreading. Corners held last storm — oak stakes and timber battens. Just need to make sure the new rope doesn't chafe.

🌿 Jenny20:45

Watch the north ridge. The clouds are bruising fast.

Presses a cold damp cloth to her forehead, trying to dull the throbbing in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning. If that tarp rips, I'll have to start the heirloom seedling management all over again.

🔧 Kevin20:45

Watching it.

Glance up at the north ridge, then finish battening the tarp corners.

💭 peek at the thought
Clouds stacking on the ridge means rain within the hour, maybe less. Wind'll back southwest with it. Dock takes the hit first — south piling's sistered but the north one's still shaky. Need eyes on it after the tarp.
