The First Gusts

The first heavy drops lash against the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny are huddled inside as the wind begins to howl through the eaves.

The rain continues steadily against the cottage as the water tank reaches its maximum capacity. Jenny rests inside, managing her ankle pain while Kevin monitors the barometer, which shows the pressure dropping further, signaling a worsening storm.

Check the ties on the shed again, Kevin. The wind is catching the corner.

Pull the grandmother's seed tin from the high shelf and wrap it tightly in the dryest oilcloth to keep the damp out.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If this storm hits as hard as the barometer suggests, the half-finished garden will be buried. My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, a dull, rhythmic heat that makes it hard to think straight. I need to make sure the seeds stay dry.

On it.

Pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab the coil of 6mm chain and the two remaining 150mm stainless through-bolts from the workbench, head out the porch door into the driving rain toward the generator shed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The shed corner's been lifting since the last blow. If that goes, we lose the generator and the spare fuel. Need to move now before the gusts hit thirty.

Don't stay out there too long, the tide is turning!

Wrap the seed tin in the oilcloth and Tuck it deep inside the waterproof crate under the bed, away from the leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up speed; if the much loses its roof cover, the generator is ruined by the salt spray. My ankle feels like it's on fire, and the fever is making the edges of the room blur. I have to stay focused on the seeds—if those get wet, the whole season's hope is gone.

Back before it peaks.

Cross the slick grass to the generator shed, wind tearing at the oilskin. The corner post has lifted two inches — chain's slack. Drive a stake, cinch the chain tight around the post and the anchor eye, bolt it down with the through-bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turning means the surge will hit the dock pilings hard. Shed first, then check the dock lashings before the water rises too far.

🌿 Jenny21:25

Get inside! The barometer is bottoming out!

Pull the blanket to my chest and press the cold pack to the swollen ankle, waiting for the door to open.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming through the thatch now. If that shed goes, the radio and the tools go with. My own is a hot spike of misery, and I can feel the feverradi off my skin with every heavy thud of the rain on the roof.

🔧 Kevin21:25

Coming in.

Sprint back across the grass, rain horizontal now, burst through the porch door and slam it shut against the howl, latch it fast.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer bottoming out means the eye's close. Wind'll back hard when it passes — that's when the dock takes the real beating. Shed's held. Get back, check the cottage shutters, then the dock if there's time before the turn.
